Assistant Biosafety Officer

Description of Work Unit
The Biosafety Office resides in the Office of the Vice President for Research. The Biosafety Office works with the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Occupational Health, and the CSU research community to develop and implement appropriate biosafety practices, create and conduct training programs, monitor and maintain compliance with regulations and guidelines, prevent/ minimize personal, laboratory and environmental exposure to biological materials, conduct laboratory audits, provide guidance on equipment, processes, and procedures, develop emergency plans for handling spills and personnel contamination, investigate laboratory incidents involving biological hazards, and report biosafety issues/noncompliance to appropriate CSU personnel and regulatory agencies. The Biosafety Office oversees infectious agent and recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid research at the following levels of containment: BSL-1, -2 and -3; ABSL-1, -2 and -3; and ACL-1, -2, and -3. We have an ext!
ensive in-person and on-line training program for all the above research applications.
Position Summary
The Assistant Biosafety Officer reports to the Biosafety Director and will be expected to possess the professional competence necessary to suggest and review specific activities and facilities for proper biohazard control; apply relevant laws, regulations, standards and guidelines; develop standard operating procedures; and be aware of community attitudes and health and environmental considerations. The Assistant Biosafety Officer will also help develop training for investigators at the BSL-1, -2 and -3; ABSL-1, -2 and -3; and ACL-1, -2, and -3 containment levels, and support the Research Safety Culture Program at CSU.
Required Job Qualifications
‰?¢ Degree in Microbiology or a closely related field.
‰?¢ 3 or more years‰?? experience in Microbiological Research or Biosafety, or a combination of the two.
‰?¢ Qualify for approval to have access to Tier 1 Select Agents.
‰?¢ Qualify within 5 years as a Registered Biosafety Professional or Certified Biological Safety Professional.
‰?¢ Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with peers and investigators, train investigators at the BSL-2 and BSL-3 levels and design and teach Biosafety training, and perform laboratory inspections, site visits and audits.
Preferred Job Qualifications
‰?¢ Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) and/ or Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP) credentialed
‰?¢ Experience with plant biosafety
‰?¢ Experience with animal facilities and biosafety
‰?¢ Experience with arthropod containment
‰?¢ Experience in teaching/training opportunities ranging from hands-on workshops to classroom and/or distance learning applications
‰?¢ Experience operating and updating databases
‰?¢ Demonstrated knowledge of, and relevant ability with, culturally diverse communities among potential target and constituent populations.

‰?¢ Perform regular audits of biosafety areas to ensure biosafety standards as well as laboratory standards are rigorously followed, including plant growth facilities and animal facilities on campus.
‰?¢ Create appropriate mechanisms for stakeholder feedback, response, and development of improvements to the audit process.
‰?¢ Report to the Director of Environmental Health Services and/or the Biosafety Officer and appropriate support and administrative officials any significant biosafety concerns, problems, trends, violations of guidelines or directives, and of investigative findings and recommendations relating to active or potential accidents and/or illnesses.
‰?¢ Advise the IBC, PIs, supervisors and workers as necessary on biohazard security, biosafety, bioengineering and technical compliance questions resulting from biosafety audits.
‰?¢ Assist in preparations for inspections including select agent inventory audits.
