ASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) ‰?? Several people were exposed to chlorine and other chemicals after a chemical spill at Lincoln Tech on Gallatin Avenue.

The building was evacuated Thursday morning as hazmat crews work to stabilize the incident.

The Nashville Fire Department said some have reported having difficulty breathing and nausea. Medics are on scene treating patients who are complaining of respiratory illnesses. At least eight others have been transported to separate hospitals, with four going to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, three to TriStar Skyline Medical Center, and one to Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital.

Thursday the Hawaii County Fire Department (HFD) responded to an acid spill in Waiakea.

Fire officials say hydrogen chloride acid spilled from containers at a freight forwarding company on Maka'ala Street.

Nine total units were on scene, including a Hazmat, ladder and four engines. Self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) were used to perform an initial survey and confirm the product and spill area.

Personnel used absorbant and a base to neutralize the acid.

California‰??s largest utility company shut off power to more than a million people across the northern part of the state on 9 and 10 October. The outage sent scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, scrambling to save specimens and experiments.

The Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), based in San Francisco, California, planned the outages to reduce the risk of wildfires. The utility cited forecasts of warm, strong winds of the sort that have fanned devastating blazes across the region in recent years. PG&E has acknowledged that its equipment likely sparked the catastrophic Camp Fire, California‰??s deadliest known wildfire, which killed 86 people in 2018. The company has said that the power outage could last several days, frustrating residents ‰?? including some researchers.

‰??Our federal grants require campus to have facilities to support our work when the damn power goes out. It‰??s ridiculous,‰?? tweeted Noah Whiteman, an evolutionary biologist at UC Berkeley. The university cancelled classes on 9 and 10 October in light of the power outage, and told faculty members not to come to campus.

The neighbouring Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) closed its main site on 10 October. It will remain shuttered until further notice, according to a notice on the LBNL website. Officials estimate the earliest they could reopen the lab is 14 October.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) - Authorities evacuated a building in St. Paul, Minnesota late Thursday morning after employees noticed a chemical was leaking from a 55-gallon drum.

St. Paul Fire Department Deputy Chief Roy Mokosso said crews responded to a hazardous materials call at 11:30 a.m. from Univar Solutions, a chemical and ingredients distributor, on the 800 block of Terrace Court.

They evacuated the building and a medical team evaluated the employees who were in close proximity to the spilled chemical. No employees reported any ill effects.

The fire department's chemical assessment team is inside the building evaluating the spill. Mokosso said there is no threat to the public at this time.

A chemical spill on Thursday morning forced cancellation of classes at the Math and Science Building at Fresno City College for the remainder of the day.

The spill reportedly took place in a chemistry lab about 9 a.m. Fresno firefighters arrived at the scene near East McKinley and North Glenn avenues with a hazardous materials team to secure the incident.

Fire department spokesman Robert Castillo said the incident took place as a class of about 30 students were asked to identify acids among seven different materials.

One of the students dropped a container, and splashed four students, Castillo said.

That prompted a hazardous materials protocol, and students were ordered out of the building. The four students splashed with the material ‰??self-decontaminated,‰?? according to Castillo, then were taken to a hospital for routine check-ups.

The fuel to the burning fire of America‰??s opioid epidemic continues to be fentanyl. It‰??s tied to nearly 130 deaths in America each day. Last year, Sara A. Carter produced a documentary titled ‰??Not in Vein‰?? to showcase exactly how the highly potent synthetic opioid is making its way across the U.S. Mexico border and into American communities. It‰??s the reason Carter testified before the Ohio state legislature to urge local lawmakers to push the federal government to designate the Mexican drug cartels Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs).

Boston, MA is one city that is ground zero for the epidemic. The local NPR affiliate WBUR reported Thursday morning that public health officials are testing a new system of to help detect the presence of fentanyl in drug mixtures found on the streets. The technology, MX908 was originally designed to detect agents of chemical warfare. It was marketed ‰??to the military and hazmat crews fighting bioterrorism or explosions.‰?? Now, it is being tested to aid public health and law enforcement officials in identifying the presence of fentanyl in local communities.

Former Director of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency Special Operation‰??s Division Derek Maltz told this reporter that the move is a step in the right direction, however he warned that ‰??the vast majority of users will not utilize this device since all they care about is feeding their addiction.‰?? Maltz was also featured in ‰??Not in Vein‰?? and testified before the Ohio legislature to push state officials to implement the FTO designation.

‰??Since we are experiencing chemical warfare in America as these poisonous chemicals are all over the country, I‰??m glad to see technology companies are trying to develop solutions to save lives.‰?? said Maltz, ‰??They should work closely with the law enforcement experts who deal with these issues on the street daily and try to build cost effective capabilities that will actually work.‰??

Five employees at Siemens were taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre for treatment after a pipe burst, releasing a chemical compound, at the Technology Drive factory in the industrial park in the southeast end of Peterborough.

Peterborough firefighters were called to the plant before 9 a.m. Thursday after it was reported that some employees were exposed to an epoxy.

Siemens communications spokesperson Laura Heidbuechel said the incident was minor.

"This morning the Siemens Peterborough facility experienced a minor incident in its factory in which a pipe burst and a small amount of chemical compound leaked," Heidbuechel stated.

"Five employees received medical attention. The Peterborough Fire Department has been through the entire building and has determined that there is no further risk to employees."

The Peterborough Siemens plant designs and makes measurement instruments for process industries in the oil and gas, environmental, chemical, food and beverage, pharmaceutical and mining sectors.

Companies stockpiling chemicals in preparation for Brexit have been warned about the safe storage of flammable, explosive or toxic chemicals and the risk of breaching regulations for holding higher quantities.

The Health and Safety Authority has urged companies to ensure they meet their legal obligations and review risk assessments for the storage of hazardous chemicals on their sites as they stockpile.

HSA assistant chief executive Yvonne Mullooly said that as the ‰??clock ticks down‰?? to the UK‰??s departure from the EU on October 31st, the regulator was aware that some companies had been increasing their stocks of raw materials for manufacturing components or finished goods on premises and in warehouses.

The safety regulator said the use and storage of hazardous chemicals presented ‰??one of the highest hazards in warehouses and storehouses‰??.

Chonsky, of Englishtown, started smoking cigarettes when she was 17 or 18, she said. Hoping to find a ‰??safer alternative‰?? ‰?? one that wouldn‰??t leave a smell ‰?? she picked up a Juul, a popular electronic cigarette device, and began vaping.

‰??I always thought it was kind of stupid, honestly,‰?? Chonsky said. ‰??I picked it up because I was quitting cigarettes. There are kids who just picked it up to pick it up.

‰??I don‰??t see why you pick up an addiction for no reason,‰?? she added. ‰??It‰??s just silly.‰??

Chonsky began using vaping devices more and more, eventually taking hits almost every 10 minutes, she said. She first had other people purchase her vapes, and she began buying them from stores and unregulated dealers as soon as she was old enough.

Two years later, what doctors first thought was pneumonia turned out to be chemical burns on her lungs ‰?? injuries that sparked shaking and cold sweats, eventually sending her to the hospital last month.

‰??The damage to my lungs was similar to if I had been near a chemical fire,‰?? Chonsky said.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. ‰??
A West Palm Beach hotel was evacuated Wednesday because of a strange smell that made a handful of people sick.

Firefighters and police responded to the Springhill Suites hotel on Metrocenter Boulevard.

Firefighters said it appears someone intentionally sprayed a chemical on the buttons inside an elevator.

Willie Williams, a guest at the hotel, said he and his grandson were walking to the elevator when they were overcome with fumes.

"The chemical smell got real strong and we actually started coughing and gagging," Williams said.

At least one person was taken to a hospital, becoming sick from the fumes.

West Palm Beach Hazmat Lt. Daniel Garcia said he had several firefighters use equipment to monitor the air inside the hotel.

Garcia said the substance is being tested in an effort to determine what it is.

WICHITA, Kan. One person suffers serious, but non life-threatening injuries and a hazmat crew responds to the scene after a tank truck tips at Wichita's North Junction where Interstate 135 and I-235 meet.

The crash and response shut down northbound I-135 north of K-96. Sedgwick County dispatch says it happened about 8:30 p.m. The truck involved in the crash was hauling a tank of anhydrous ammonia.

About two hours after the crash, as a precaution, the Sedgwick County Fire Department advised people living within a mile of the North Junction to shelter in place (stay inside) for three to four hours as crews worked to clear the scene.

Sedgwick County says residents in the area might smell the ammonia from the leak, but "there is no immediate harm to the area."

lasses were cancelled and lab work postponed at the University of California, Berkeley, today (October 9) as the Pacific Gas and Electric Company scheduled a power shutdown to parts of campus to guard against potential wildfires in the area. UC Berkeley‰??s power lines are fed by transformers in the East Bay hills, which were placed under a red flag alert for extreme wildfire danger starting Wednesday at 5 am. The campus is open with limited service, according to a press release. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a Department of Energy lab next to UC Berkeley where some of the university‰??s researchers have lab space, is also temporarily closing.

The outage is a preventive measure by Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) due to expected high winds that could cause wildfires by knocking down live power lines. The utility company has stated the shutdown could last for as long as five days, given that all of the area‰??s power lines will need to be inspected after power is restored, reports The New York Times.

Helen Liu, a Berkeley grad student studying algae photosynthesis, says that freezers in her lab are running on backup generators, and some samples have been moved to rooms that will maintain power. Not all experiments can be moved to safety because of limited space. Some specimens in her lab and nearby plant biology labs will be kept in the dark during the outage. ‰??The change in light and temperature can affect experiments that rely on physiology of the plant, and these experiments will have to be restarted,‰?? she tells The Scientist in an email, adding that it could mean ‰??quite a number of weeks lost‰?? for some experiments.

GARDEN CITY, Ga. (WSAV) ‰?? Savannah Fire Rescue, along with Garden City Fire and Chatham County EMS, responded to a chemical accident that left two warehouse workers burned Wednesday morning.

The accident happened at a Coastal Logistics Group warehouse located at 986 A Bourne Avenue.

Officials say two workers were transferring a dry powder substance, called Voxtar-M40, into a container when a flash fire broke out. Both workers were injured.

Voxtar-M40 is a non-toxic product that is added to other products to reduce their carbon footprint. It is a fine, dry powder that has a high surface area volume ratio, like sugar dust, and can burn instantly when exposed to the energy from a spark, causing a small explosion.

QUEENSBURY ‰?? Warren County has purchased equipment for its firefighting apparatus at the county airport to stop the spread of a chemical that is suspected of causing health problems.

A foam used to fight aircraft fires contains fluorinated chemicals, which can include PFOA and PFOS, but the county airport staff has purchased a $30,000 piece of equipment that is being used to keep the chemicals from being discharged into the environment.

PFOA and PFOS have gotten scrutiny in recent years for their possible health effects on humans, including cancer and immune system problems. They are present in the foam that is used at airports to fight fires involving aviation fuel.

Airport staff members are required to test the equipment twice a year by spraying the foam. But Warren County Public Works Superintendent Kevin Hajos said airport management was apprised of the chemical concerns and instructed to take action to prevent discharging the foam during the tests.

Don DeGraw, the county‰??s airport manager, said the foam does not contain PFOA or PFOS, but the fluorinated chemicals in the foam can ‰??degrade‰?? to a substance that includes those chemicals when the foam is exposed to the environment.

When an old storage tank caught fire Monday (Oct. 7) at DDP Specialty Electronic Materials (formerly Dow Chemical), 500 Dow Industrial Drive, in Pevely, it produced a lot of flames and smoke, but the blaze wasn‰??t as bad as it looked, Dunklin Fire Chief Brad Williams said.

‰??We were dispatched about 3:30 p.m. to DDP,‰?? Williams said. ‰??They had a storage tank in the rear of the facility that had been decommissioned. They were cutting the tank apart and it ignited.

‰??It looked like a pretty good fire, but it was contained in the storage tank.‰??

He said no injuries were reported and firefighters put out the blaze in about 20 minutes.
