<I am looking to understand "best practices" for safety refresher training. >

My "recommendation" (read: requirement) has been the following:

Annual refresher:

Injury and Illness Prevention Program (Cal/OSHA)

Emergency Action Plan (Cal/OSHA)

Spill Response (County Environmental Health)

Campus Lab Safety Manual (which includes the campus Chemical Hygiene Plan)

Laboratory-Specific Lab Safety Plan

Folks are free to select pieces of these documents/programs which make the most sense for them to highlight in their various workplaces. Some folks will roll all of this into an annual powerpoint, along with lab-specific issues which need updating.  They are my rock stars.

3-year Refresher:

Laboratory Safety Fundamentals Training (on-line requirement from the UC System)

Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (unless the SOPs have changed significantly, then re-training is required at the time of the change)

This schedule is applicable to those who are subject to the requirements of the Lab Standard.

Hope this helps.

Debbie

Birkett's hypothesis: "Any chemical reaction

that proceeds smoothly under normal conditions,

can proceed violently in the presence of an idiot."
