EASTON ?? Airpark Drive in Easton was closed off or partially closed most of the morning and into the afternoon Saturday, Sept. 28, while HAZMAT teams tried to contain a leak from a 9,000-pound ammonia tank at Sea Watch International, 8978 Glebe Park Drive.
Early Saturday morning, two employees at Sea Watch noticed leaking valves in the large storage tank, went outside and called emergency services. They were the only employees present in the building, and no injuries were reported.
First at the scene, Chief Sonny Jones of the Easton Volunteer Fire Department called the HAZMAT team from Anne Arundel County at 8:27 a.m.

ROUEN, FRANCE ?? Authorities in northern France where a massive fire last week ravaged a chemical factory in the city of Rouen on Sunday banned the harvesting of crops and sale of produce of animal origin from the region, as a precautionary measure.
Soot spewed out by the blaze over some agricultural areas was ??liable to present a public health risk that requires us to take immediate measures on a precautionary basis,?? the regional administration said.
It added in decrees published on Sunday that in the absence of food safety guarantees from producers, anything likely to have been exposed to contamination would have to be destroyed.
Around 100 districts in the area surrounding Rouen are expected to have been affected.

HOUSTON, Texas -- Two Harris County Sheriff's deputies were taken to the hospital after they came into contact with fumes of an unknown origin, authorities said.
It happened sometime around 6 p.m. Saturday in the 14200 block of Bonnie Brier in northwest Harris County, according to a Twitter post from the sheriff's office.
The two were originally called to the home to investigate a possible drug overdose, according to the post.
Hazmat crews responded to the home and determined there was no fentanyl present, according to a HSCO sergeant on the scene.
The deputies complained of nausea and were being tested at a hospital Saturday night.

East China's Jiangsu and Shandong provinces have recently rolled out a slew of measures to upgrade their chemical factories ahead of the upcoming National Day holiday, in a move that analysts say reflects the provinces' determination to deliver on environmental protection and production safety.
In a notice issued earlier in September, the Jiangsu provincial government said that there is a plan for a total of 579 chemical firms and nine chemical industrial parks to be shut down in 2019.
One of the nine industrial parks is the Xiangshui Park, which was ordered into a complete shutdown in April following a deadly explosion in March which killed 78 people and injured hundreds.
Jiangsu will ramp up efforts to crack down on unqualified chemical firms by following the roadmaps of "one plan for one firm" and "one plan for one park," according to the notice.

France's health minister on Friday said she could not guarantee there was no risk to the public after a massive fire ravaged a chemicals factory in the northern city of Rouen, spewing smoke and soot.
Schools in the city were shuttered for a second day following the huge blaze which erupted on Thursday in a storage facility owned by Lubrizol, a manufacturer of industrial lubricants and fuel additives owned by the billionaire American investor Warren Buffett.
"The city is clearly polluted," minister Agnes Buzyn said after visiting the scene, adding: "I cannot guarantee that there is no danger. There are of course traces of hydrocarbons."
Earlier Pierre-Andre Durand, head of the Seine-Maritime department in Normandy, tried to reassure residents despite the strong smell of hydrocarbons hanging over the city, famed for its cathedral.
"We have no more concerns about the fire," he said, as firefighters worked to mop up the residues deposited by the oily, black plume that darkened Rouen and surrounding areas for most of Thursday.

SAN DIEGO ?? A spill of about 50 gallons of chlorine and muriatic acid at Agua Caliente County Park sent two people to a hospital Friday.
The accident in the 39500 block of Great Southern Overland Stage Route in the Julian area was reported about 9:30 a.m., according to Cal Fire.
Details on the circumstances of the mishap were not immediately available, but it may have occurred while workers were mixing the chemicals for use in a swimming pool at the park, said Issac Sanchez, a fire captain with the state agency.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director, Mohamed Yunus Abu said the Hazardous Materials Unit (Hazmat) team had used three types of hazardous chemical detectors, namely litmus paper, ??GFG 450?? and Gasmed.
He said the three-time detection using litmus paper and GFG 450 four times did not give any disturbing readings.
??The GFG 450 can detect four major substances namely oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane gas and hydrogen sulphide and monitoring until 3 am did not indicate any hazardous substances in the air,?? he told Bernama.

FATAL EXPLOSION SLAMS SOUTH KOREA??S HYDROGEN FUTURE

South Korean resident groups have been protesting hydrogen stations being built in their area following a May explosion in a hydrogen storage tank at a government research project in the city of Gangneung. Two people were killed, six injured, and the complex half the size of a soccer field was destroyed.
A month later, an explosion occurred at a hydrogen refueling station in Norway. This week, three South Korean workers were burned at a chemical plant caused by a hydrogen leak and subsequent fire.
A preliminary investigation into the fatal May explosion determined that the blast was caused by a spark after oxygen found its way into the tank.
??One victim was blown away by pressure and then killed after being hit by rock,?? said Kong Gikwang, a lawyer who represents the family of one of the two who died in a lawsuit against the research complex.

BALED STRAW CATCHES FIRE ON RIVERHEAD FARM

Riverhead firefighters doused a fire on a farm north of Sound Avenue this afternoon, where numerous rolls of baled straw caught fire.
It was spontaneous combustion, Riverhead Fire Department spokesperson William Sanok said. The bales heated up and had just enough moisture in them to catch fire, Sanok said.
Moisture in baled hay or straw causes chemical reactions that produce flammable gas, which when the bale??s internal temperature gets hot enough, can spontaneously ignite.
About 20 bales were involved, Sanok said.
A dozen Riverhead firefighters with two trucks and a tanker responded to the 12:30 p.m. call, he said.
