> >Also, what do you think about ACS doing all of the dangerous demos that have damaged many high school labs and filming them as the standard for safe chemistry? I would love to see dangerous demos all done on video and completely done away with in high school labs.
I wonder if you have any specific examples of this in mind?
I have participated in several reviews of suggested ACS demonstrations for classroom work and know that ACS education staff are very concerned about safety in the demonstrations they suggest and work carefully to provide explicit instructions for safe practices while performing the demonstrations. See
https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/chemical-safety/teach-and-learn/flame-test.html
as an example.
However, there are many chemistry related outreach efforts that use variations on ACS recommendations that could create greater risks for both the instructor and the audience. We within the Committee on Chemical Safety are exploring ways to better address this concern. Examples of "ACS doing ... dangerous demos" would be helpful in this effort.
Thanks for any information on this,.
