This is a reminder that the submission abstract deadline for the CHAS/CANN technical program Spring 2020 in Philadelphia is October 14. We have a varied slate of symposium available for you to share your work at. You can submit an abstract at https://callforpapers.acs.org/philadelphia2020
This symposia titles include:
- Chemical Safety Film Festival,
organized by Robin Izzo
This Symposium will showcase the best short (less than 10 minutes) safety videos and communications. Presenters will share their best short videos, posters, and other media, and will describe the intended audience, goals, and process.
- Designing and Operating Facilities with Safety in Mind,
organized by Christopher Incarvito and Joseph Pickel
This symposium will build upon previous events focused on the increased role of design and managed operations in the research enterprise. The collaborative nature of scientific research teams requires an equally as collaborative planning and operations team. More and more, professionals trained in specific scientific disciplines are seeking positions with broader responsibilities beyond their perceived core competencies å? space design, facilities, laboratory management, purchasing, finance, etc. This session will explore the form-to-function dynamic of laboratory design with an eye towards designing spaces that safeguard researchers by implementing environmental health and safety features early in the design process. å? Application of safety-guided space planning å? Examine post-occupancy risk-mitigation strategies å? Discuss and compare specific laboratory design case studies å? new building, renovation, relocation, etc. å? as they relate to safety.
- Designing Safety into an Undergraduate Laboratory Curriculum, Beyond Safety Rules,
organized by Jeanne Berk and Ralph Stuart
Safety is everyone's responsibility, from the PI down to the students taking introductory classes. On day one you hand out the syllabus and a list of the safety rules. What other steps have you used to add a level of safety into your teaching and research labs? Possible examples include substituting labs that utilize less hazardous chemicals, incorporating RAMP into the lab curriculum, requiring documented training before allowing students to use certain materials, etc.
- Safety Across the Scientific Disciplines: Where are the Successes & What Needs Improvements,
organized by Caroline Multari and Ralph Stuart
Safety has become a very important topic in recent years due in part to lab accidents resulting in serious injury and in a few cases death. We are seeking examples of ways to incorporate best practices, or examples of correcting areas needing improvement from academia, industry, and government labs. Through this session we would like to show how to effectively incorporate and encourage a safety culture across multiple disciplines
- Safety Knowledge I Wish I Had in School,
organized by Debbie Decker and Daniel Kuespert
Organized as a ‰??safety slam‰?? with short presentations with time for discussion, presenters share a safety fact or technique they wished they had learned in school, as opposed to the hard way.
- Transition from the Academic Laboratory to Industrial Employment,
organized by Neal Langerman
This symposium will invite speakers to address å?What I wished I learned in grad school about safety to ease the transition to industry.å? Preparing Chemists to work in the real world
- Division of Chemical Health & Safety Poster Session,
organized by Joseph Pickel
The CHAS Poster session is open to submissions on any topic related to chemical safety. This poster session is normally scheduled during SCI-MIX (Monday, 8-10pm)
CANN symposia titles include:
Enzymes and Metabolism of Cannabinoids, organized by Savino Sguera, Marco Troiani
Micro vs Macrodosing: Medical vs Recreational, organized by Chris Witowski
The Next Generation: Cannabis Delivery Beyond Smoking organized by Chris Witowski
The Second Annual ElSohly Award Symposium organized by Kyle Boyar
Women in Cannabis organized by Julia Bramante
Let me know if you have any questions about this.
