A burst pipe at West Coast milk factory that released acid vapour near a Hokitika pathway appears not to have affected passers-by.

At about 1pm on Sunday, a chemical cleaning hose at the Westland Milk Products factory next to the Hokitika riverbank cycleway burst.

The burst pipe released steam, which for a time included dilute nitric acid, which dispersed across the nearby walking and cycleway.

The company's communications manager, Steve Attwood, said a person was stationed on the track to stop people walking through the vapour while the pipe was being shut down.

On Monday July 22nd, 2019 a lightning strike ignited the Sheep Fire, the largest wildland fire in Idaho National Laboratory's history. It lasted four days and burned 112,107 acres. Most notably, no injuries were incurred to employees or response personnel and property damage was kept to a minimum throughout the event. The success of the response originated with excellent prior preparation and exemplary task execution by all responders.

On April 11, 2018, there was an incident in the Accelerated Retrieval Project (ARP) V facility at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Site: a thermal event led to subsequent energetic release of radioactive material from four 55-gal drums of suspect transuranic (TRU) waste located in the ARP V airlock drum storage area. No personnel were in the vicinity when the reactions occurred and the drums were in a high efficiency particulate air filtered area. There was no detected release to the environment. During the initial response on April 11, 2018, INL firefighters entered the facility and observed one drum with a lid off; no flames were observed but smoke was emanating from the top of a drum. The firefighters attempted unsuccessfully to extinguish hot spots in the affected drum, moved the drum away from the array of staged drums, and exited the facility. Responders established a 24-hour facility surveillance, fire watch, radiological surveys and ventilation monitoring to asses!
s conditions. On April 19, 2018, workers

CALHOUN, GA ‰?? A chemical fire shut down an entire north Georgia school system on Friday. Calhoun city schools closed after what school officials described as a "hazardous chemical fire" posed a threat to air quality in and around the schools. School officials also were advising everyone in the area to remain indoors.

The chemical fire happened at a manufacturing plant on Wall Street. Fire officials told Fox 5 there were 10 workers in the building when the explosion happened. The fire started around 1 am, according to Channel 2, at the DHM Adhesives plant. One person is reported to have been injured, and the fire has been contained.

PALM SPRINGS - Paramedics took one person to a hospital and treated another on the scene after an incident involving chemicals Friday at a building in Palm Springs, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue reports.

Fire Rescue crews responded at about 1 p.m. to reports of a fire on the 1500 block of South Congress Avenue, north of Forest Hill Boulevard. The first arriving firefighters were told there may have been an explosion inside the building, said Capt. Albert Borroto, spokesman for Fire Rescue.

Further investigation revealed that two chemicals had been mixed together, causing a significant reaction that dispersed power throughout the work area.

Fire Rescue crews and a West Palm Beach HazMat team cleared the area and confirmed there were no life-safety hazards, Borroto said.

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), the body responsible for implementing chemical regulation across the European Union, has unveiled plans to introduce a hazardous waste database in 2021 to ensure that the waste is safe to recycle. According to recent guidelines from ECHA, suppliers of substances of very high concern (SVHCs) will have to provide information for the database when more than 0.1% of the weight of a finished product, such as an electronic device, is an SVHC. The agency plans to roll out a prototype database in early 2020.

Nearly six years after a high school chemistry experiment went terribly wrong, one young man is opening up about an explosion that left him with burns on more than 30 percent of his body.

Alonzo Yanes recounted the horrifying experience to Inside Edition in an interview Thursday, saying that he was about two and a half feet from where his teacher was conducting the Rainbow Experiment, which is meant to show how igniting different types of salts produces colorful flames, at Beacon High School in Manhattan, New York, in January 2014.

‰??I remember feeling this immense heat completely come forward and wrap around my entire body,‰?? Yanes recalled of the classroom disaster, which happened when he was in 10th grade.

When the teacher poured a flammable substance into a bowl of nitrate, the experiment went awry and caused an explosion, engulfing him in flames and landing him in the hospital for five months.

‰??I remember these flashes of blue and orange just flying toward my face. I remember feeling this burning sensation everywhere around my head,‰?? Yanes said, explaining that he dropped to floor to try to put out the fire. ‰??I was yelling out ‰??help, help, somebody help me, please.'‰??
