PATIALA: Major fire in a chemical Factory at the focal point on Saturday in which chemicals worth lakhs were gutted, the district administration on Monday ordered an inspection of all commercial and educational institutions in the district for compliance of fire safety norms.
Deputy Commissioner Kumar Amit said that the fire department has been asked to carry out an extensive survey of the district to ensure that all commercial and educational establishments had fire fighting equipment in place so as to deal with any eventuality arising out of a fire incident.

Commissioners Court on Tuesday voted to hire 61 employees across three departments in a bid to significantly boost Harris County‰??s ability to respond to environmental emergencies after finding numerous shortcomings in its efforts to manage three chemical fires near the Houston Ship Channel this spring.

The $11.6 million investment will go toward purchasing new equipment and add employees to the fire marshal‰??s office, pollution control and public health departments. It is the most aggressive effort yet by the new Democrat-controlled court, which took office in January, to grow the emergency response infrastructure in the county, home to the heart of the nation‰??s petrochemical industry.

A Houston Chronicle investigation found that the staffing levels of the three departments have for decades failed to keep pace with the growth of commercial activity along the Houston Ship Channel. Previous Commissioners Courts had not acted with the same sense of urgency after chemical incidents; the county never replaced the Pollution Control employees laid off during the Great Recession. Instead, court members prided themselves on finishing fiscal years with a large fund balance.

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. ‰?? Schools and homes were evacuated Tuesday afternoon after a train derailment in Dupo.

All students and staff in the Dupo School District were transported to Columbia High School in Columbia, Illinois. A spokesperson for the school said parents must sign out students at the front door.

Several dozen homes in the nearby area were also evacuated. Residents were sent to the East Carondelet Community Center.

The call first came in around 12:45 p.m. for a train derailment and fire in the 2400 block of Carondelet Avenue. Thirteen rail cars went off the train track.

Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles. Dupo, Illinois is about 15 minutes from St. Louis.

"Flames were shooting up like crazy, you could see it up above the smoke," One resident in Dupo said.

The Dept of Labor has made recommendations following an explosion when incompatible materials stored inside a mining car reacted violently.

The incident occurred on June 3rd, when approximately 20,000 gallons of liquid waste-derived fuel (LWDF), spewed from the railcar for 34 seconds. The eruption sent waste fuel several hundred feet into the air and ripped the manway hatch from the railcar.

The hatch came to rest approximately 370 yards from the railcar. Droplets of LWDF traveled more than 1/3 of a mile, landing on a number of buildings, structures, and vehicles near the facility.

Agitators in several of the LWDF tanks were not maintained in functional condition. The facility was blending and storing incoming loads of LWDF in railcars.

WEBSTERCITY ‰?? Webster City Firefighters and the Region V Hazardous Materials Response Team responded to the spill of an unknown acidic substance near the corner of Second and Beach streets Monday afternoon.

Webster City Fire Chief Chuck Stansfield said when firefighters arrived on scene, the substance was ‰??off gassing and boiling‰?? in the street. Stansfield said a bottle of the substance had apparently fallen off the back of a truck.

‰??We called in the Region V Hazmat team,‰?? Stansfield said. ‰??They determined the substance was a strong acid and used a material to neutralize the acid.‰??

Once the acid was neutralized, firefighters were able to wash down the street.

‰??There‰??s no further danger to the public,‰?? Stansfield said.

The Webster City Police Department assisted and blocked off First Street and Beach Street for a short time while the Haz Mat team and firefighters cleared the substance.

A Vietnamese light bulb maker admitted to using liquid mercury, a danger to human health at high temperatures, and its director issued a public apology after fire destroyed a Hanoi factory that released the toxic metal that forced hundreds of people to evacuate schools and homes.

According to local Vietnamese media on September 8, the admission came during a meeting between a representative of the Rang Dong Light Bulb Company and the General Department of Environment on August 31, just one day after the company Company told local media it had stopped using liquid mercury in favor of safer mercury-zinc-bismuth amalgam in 2016.

Mercury vaporizes at a temperature of 674 degrees Fahrenheit (356 degrees Celsius). In vapor form, it can dissolve into the air and disperse in harmful concentrations, according to an expert quoted by the Lao Dong Online Newspaper days after the fire.

Rang Dong told the environment department that it used liquid mercury in the amount of 20 mg per bulb for some 480,000 fluorescent light bulbs, along with amalgam in 1.6 million compact bulbs, as well as other toxic chemicals.

Shortly after the fire in Hanoi‰??s Ha Dinh ward, the ward‰??s People‰??s Committee issued a notice saying that the people should not consume vegetables and fruit, poultry, fish or pigs raised within one kilometer of the factory for a period of 21 days. The notice also advised residents not to use local water sources in the same area.

According to the 30-page report from the EPA‰??s Office of Inspector General, or OIG, the agency has for years failed to put ‰??sufficient controls‰?? in place when it comes to enforcing its own lead renovation, repair and painting rule.

The rule, established in 2008, is a three-prong program meant to improve lead paint regulation, compliance and education and outreach initiatives the agency uses to inform the public of the hazardous effects lead paint may have on them, and whether it is present where they live or work.

Denmark will become the first country to ban controversial poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from food packaging in 2020, the country‰??s food minister Mogens Jensen recently announced. PFAS refers to a family of highly-fluorinated chemicals, the most well-known of which have been shown to be toxic and highly persistent in the human body and environment.

‰??I will not accept the risk of harmful fluorinated substances migrating from the packaging to our food. These substances represent such a health problem that we can no longer wait for the EU,‰?? Jensen stated.

There are nearly 5000 PFAS chemicals in use commercially, some of which are more widely used and better studied than others. Some of these substances, like perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), have been linked to adverse health effects such as liver damage, reduced immune function and cancers, as well as birth defects and fertility issues.
