David,

I also have a BS & MS in Chemical Engineering, with 49 years of work experience in chemical manufacturing and EHS management & consulting.  In addition to ACS, I'm a member of AIChE and ASSP.  I would be happy to talk to your nephew and perhaps make some suggestions.

One resource which I would suggest he might want to review is the investigations of the CSB (www.csb.gov).

I have a nephew who recently finished his MS in chemical engineering.  He has taken a job with a medium-size technical consulting firm and part of his responsibilities will be working with teams where his role will be to examine the "big picture" of suggested plant renovations that includes issues of safety.  He and I chatted quite a bit about this and I suggested to him that joining a professional organization, or two, would be a very wise move.  I opined about the value of the D-CHAS list serve and suggested that organizations (perhaps more targeted towards chemical engineers) might have similar resources.  How would you advise him?
