THE illegally dumped chemicals in Sg Kim Kim were not disposed of by the authorities as they were ruled no longer reactive, and the process would have been expensive.

That decision, however, has proven to be more costly.

West Kelowna‰??s Best Western hotel was evacuated Thursday and one person was sent to hospital following an incident with pool cleaning chemicals.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue responded to a reported chemical spill at the hotel, on Carrington Road, at around 4 p.m. and crews quickly secured the area, evacuated the hotel and requested the assistance of the Regional HAZMAT team from Kelowna.

‰??HAZMAT teams entered the pool maintenance area where they discovered a solution of acid and chlorine in a bucket that an employee had inadvertently mixed during routine pool maintenance,‰?? said assistant chief Brent Watson.

UPDATE 4:28 p.m. Student Services was evacuated because of an accidental discharge of pepper spray Tuesday afternoon, according to a post from Michigan State University Police.

Student Services has been evacuated as of Tuesday afternoon. Police and fire units are evaluating the situation.

MSU Police officers on location said a fire alarm had been pulled and the situation was being assessed. Firefighters were also on scene. Evacuated students and staff stood in groups around the building.

MSU Sexual Assault Program Director Tana Fedewa was among those evacuated from the building. Fedewa said she smelled what felt like a chemical substance on the way to the program's suite on the second floor.

"Immediately, it was a wall of ‰?? like, I couldn't breathe, it was in the back of my throat," Fedewa said. "I heard people say 'pull the fire alarm,' and I saw people ... covering their mouths and trying to get to the fire alarm."

FARGO ‰?? Authorities came to a North Dakota State University laboratory Tuesday, March 12, to remove an expired chemical that could have combusted if it had crystallized, according to the Fargo Fire Department.

The fire department, NDSU police and Fargo bomb squad ‰?? some wearing hazmat outfits ‰?? were at Dunbar Laboratory at about 10:30 a.m. The removal of the chemical was planned for Tuesday because the university is on spring break.

Battalion Chief Joe Mangin of the Fargo Fire Department said a professor had notified authorities to express concerns about the chemical, a clear colorless liquid called tetrahydrofuran. Authorities said the chemical could have exploded if it had crystallized.

It took roughly two hours for crews to safely remove the chemical from the area.

Eastbound Route 30 reopened overnight near the East Pittsburgh Street ramps in Greensburg, after a driver apparently threw a jug of chemicals at another car in an apparent road-rage incident on Tuesday night.

The westbound lanes reopened around 11:45 p.m., according to Westmoreland 911 officials.

‰??The person threw a five-gallon jug of xylene out the window,‰?? Hempfield No. 2 Fire Chief Tom Kline said.

Xylene is a chemical solvent, typically used as a paint thinner.

London ‰?? With three weeks until the United Kingdom's deadline to separate from the European Union, significant concerns remain about its ability to maintain a chemical trade.

Robin Teverson, a member of Parliament and chairman of the House of Lords' EU Energy and Environment subcommittee, says that the government may not have prepared regulations, or properly resourced the regulatory agency for its work after Brexit.

"We are a mere three weeks away from potentially having to regulate chemicals for ourselves. As far as we can tell we have with neither a functioning database nor a functioning regulator. The government is risking people‰??s safety, not to mention the viability of the UK‰??s chemicals sector, by not being adequately prepared," Teverson said.

The committee has been corresponding with the U.K.'s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to find out whether a U.K. chemical database will be ready and tested on Brexit day.

EPA TAKES CLOSER LOOK AT CONFIDENTIALITY OF SAFETY STUDIES UNDER TSCA

The US EPA says that it is going to be "much more careful" with how it approaches the protection of confidential business information (CBI), following public outcry over its withholding of health and safety data supporting a TSCA risk evaluation.

Speaking last week at the GlobalChem conference in Washington, DC, Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention Assistant Administrator Alexandra Dunn said that the agency has learned from the controversy over its draft evaluation of pigment violet 29 (PV29).

The draft evaluation, released last November, relied in part on 20 studies submitted to Echa, when the substance was registered under REACH, that were protected as CBI. But several consumer advocacy groups protested that health and safety data cannot be withheld and filed a public records request to gain access to them.

In her public remarks, Ms Dunn acknowledged that the agency has received "a lot of very strong feedback" on its PV29 review.

And the government shutdown, she said, forced a delay to the peer review process and gave the EPA more time to think about those comments and "address the perception ‰?? real, or perceived (since perception is reality for many people) ‰?? how we can be more transparent in the work we‰??re doing."

A section of Health Sciences Centre was evacuated on Tuesday after staff discovered a substance in the pathology lab that is potentially reactive when in a dry form.
‰??The substance, picric acid, is a standard lab material in its liquid form used to preserve muscle tissue for further testing. Laboratory staff are trained and skilled in its safe use," said a spokesperson for the Winnipeg Regional health Authority in an email.
After the discovery, the hospital‰??s security and fire marshal secured the area and it was evacuated. According to the WRHA there‰??s no risk to other areas of the hospital.
The Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service‰??s hazmat and paramedic crews were called to the scene to help remove the substance.

WOBURN, MWRA WATER FREE OF HARMFUL CHEMICAL

WOBURN, MA -- City officials said tests of water for the city and other communities on the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority System tested negative polyfluoroalkyl chemicals, commonly known as PFAS. Last week the Boston Globe reported that at least seven Massachusetts communities had drinking water supplies that tested positive for PFAS.

MWRA provides water to 3.1 million people in 61 communities in greater Boston.

In addition to Danvers, Harvard, and Hudson, the level of PFAS found in water supplies in Ayer, Barnstable, Mashpee, and Westfield, were in concentrations that exceeded safety guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Those communities are not on the MWRA distribution system.

Because the chemicals never fully degrade, PFAS are known as "forever chemicals," the newspaper reported. The Department of Defense found high levels of the chemicals in 60 percent of the2,700 wells near military bases it has tested in the recent years. In most cases, the chemicals probably came from a fire fighting foam commonly used by the military.

AMESBURY TRUTH CHEMICAL SPILL: 3 IN HOSPITAL WITH SERIOUS INJURIES

Two people remain in intensive care at Strong Memorial Hospital on Monday after sustaining life-threatening injuries during a morning chemical spill inside a Jefferson Road building.

What happened?

The incident happened around 9:20 a.m. when demolition crews cutting into a concrete wall at Amesbury Truth, 1555 Jefferson Road, pierced pipes containing the chemical compound methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, or MDI, said Henrietta Fire District Assistant Chief Mark Cholach.

Amesbury Truth makes window and door products, including weatherstripping made out of foam and other materials.

He said the demolition workers were clearing equipment inside the building to prep for a move when the spill happened. While chemical storage tanks had been cleaned out, there was apparently some "residual" MDI inside the pipes that "went to aerosolized form once it hit the air," Cholach said. It appears that they were not wearing protective gear at the time of the spill, he said.

"I don't believe they thought there was any chemical process or chemical product still in the system," said Cholach.

LEBANON COUNTY, Pa. ‰?? Approximately 10 homes on School House Road in South Londonderry Township had to be evacuated because of a reported Hazmat incident.

Firefighters say they were called to the area after a child went to the hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning.

Officials called to a Hazmat team and a sewer company to the area to check out the levels; officials deemed the levels concerning.

Emergency officials evacuated people in those homes as a result.

School House Road and Bradford Street were closed for around 3 hours due to the incident.
