WASHINGTON, DC--The Endocrine Society applauded the reintroduction of a Senate bill that would give government regulators needed authority to protect consumers from exposure to hazardous endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in cosmetics and other personal care products.

The Personal Care Products Safety Act, co-sponsored by U.S. Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Susan Collins, would set a rigorous safety standard for personal care products and provide the public with more information about the chemicals in the products they are purchasing. The Society and its 18,000 members, including researchers studying the health risks of endocrine-disrupting chemical exposure, are leading efforts to enact science-based policies that would protect the public from these chemicals.

"Soaps, lotions, cosmetics and other personal care products contain known endocrine-disrupting chemicals, including phthalates, parabens and the antibacterial triclosan," said Heather Patisaul, Ph.D., a member of the Society's Endocrine-disrupting Chemicals Advisory Group. "Current chemical testing and labeling rules do not adequately inform or protect consumers from the long-term health risks these chemicals pose, particularly to pregnant women and children."

A weekly article that will offer information concerning the Kilgore Fire Department and provide safety tips for home and family.

The Center for Disease Control reports that nearly 5000 people visit the emergency room after being injured by pool chemicals. As warmer weather approaches, we all begin to look at activies such as swimming. Make sure that as you prepare your pool for swimming that you do it safely.

Pool Chemicals

Swimming pool chemicals include a variety of disinfectants and santizers designed to control the growth of algae, bacteria, and other forms of infectious organisms.

Proper Pool Chemical Storage

Storing pool chemicals properly will result in less hazards including spills, cross-contamination, container damage and exposure to personnel. Storage tips are listed below to ensure safety:

‰?¢ Store pool chemicals separately. Pool chemicals are incompatible and can react, resulting in fires or toxic gas.

‰?¢ Segregate chlorine products.

‰?¢ Do not allow chemicals to come into contact with acid, grease, oil, or other lubricants.

Victoria's work safety watchdog has exposed three more chemical dump sites in Melbourne's north, notching up the three-month stockpile total to almost a dozen.

It appears bulk containers, similar to those found at eight other sites in the northern suburbs in late December, are at the new locations, with security guards now patrolling them around the clock.

FEDERAL AGENCIES MIGHT BE ABOUT LOSE THEIR DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY

The Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission (OSHRC) might be the latest independent federal agency to lose its decision-making authority after two board members depart by the end of April.

The OSHRC is responsible for hearing appeals to federal workplace safety violations. Chairwoman Heather MacDougall said she plans to exit the agency in less than a month. Commissioner Cynthia Attwood is due to leave the board at the end of April when her term expires, Bloomberg Law reports.

....
Two other independent agencies are already operating without quorums in 2019. The Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB), which hears federal employees‰?? appeals of pay cuts, furloughs, firings and other matters, lost its last sitting board member March 1 when his term ended, Federal News Network reports.

....
The U.S. Chemical Safety Board is also set to lose its quorum as its three remaining board members near the end of their terms. Manuel Ehrlich is term-limited in December 2018 and Rick Engler in February 2020. Kristen Kulinowski, who also serves as the board‰??s interim executive, is set to leave the agency in August 2020.
