Denise,
In all Chemistry and Biochemistry undergraduate labs here at UCLA we require lab coats. We require FR rated lab coats in the upper division courses, so recommend to students to buy the FR coats if they intend to take the advanced labs.
Due to costs there are some options for free or rental coats. The professional chemistry fraternity Alpha Chi Sigma has a chapter here (Beta Gamma) and rents coats. There is also a group associated with the bookstore that provides free coats to needy students.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Required Use of Lab Coats in Undergraduate Chemistry Teaching Labs
All,
I am trying to find any information regarding the requirement of the use of a lab coat by students in general chemistry labs vs. upper level courses such as organic, advance lab, inorganic, etc. Does ACS have recommendations/guidelines to that end? What are some of your experiences at your institutions? Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Denise
