Hi Ruth Ann,

I taught the Institute for Chemical Education (ICE) demonstration program from 1984 to 1997 and helped run their Chem Camp program. The Chem Camp ran for 5 mornings.  Although the Chem Camp was aimed mainly at middle school students, there are a number of activities that are well suited to high school students along with other ICE activities.  These can be a good starting point for designing your program.

The ICE Kits and Publications are listed at https://ice.chem.wisc.edu/kits-and-publications  I've used a number of them for my classes and for outreach.  Under Publications, look at the Chem Camp Handbook.  I don't know if the handbook contains all the experiments and activities we used as I have the individual handbooks for each day of the "camp".

The Fun With Chemistry Guidebook of K-12 Activities, Vol. 1 and 2, are the experiments and activities we used to teach the teachers in the program demonstrations and activities to use in their classes.

On my web site, www.chymist.com , I have a number of experiments you might want to use.  Go to http://www.chymist.com/Laboratory%20Experiments.htm
The "Testing the Waters" experiment grew out of work I did with a local (in suburban Philadelphia) Watershed Association, for 15 years,  where every 6th grader in the local school district were taken to the local watershed to test the water.  It uses Hach Test kits for easier set-up.

I use the nanotechnology experiments Synthesis of Aqueous Ferrofluid Particles and Synthesis of Cholesteryl Ester Liquid Crystal Experiments with both my General Chemistry and Non-Major classes.  I take the excess liquid crystal mixtures to the Childrens Museum where they can make liquid crystal stickers.

The Preparation of Synthetic Rubber is a microscale preparation in a vial.
There are a number of other experiments you can use, depending on the topics you decide to cover.

Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Best regards,

David

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Summer Chemistry Camp?

Hi,

Does anyone have a schedule of activities, preferably with details on experiments and demonstrations,  for a summer, overnight, e.g., 4 days -3 nights, Chemistry Camp for high school students?  Thank you!
