Hi Everyone!
I have been having a dialog on my Linkedin Web Page with many people lately regarding several aspects of perchloric acid fume hoods. Suddenly, two separate researchers in Africa
started extolling the virtues of ductless perchloric hoods. One researcher claimed the hood he used “neutralized” all acids, including perchloric acid, the other (at a different facility), claimed the carbon filter “filtered” poisonous fumes.
At first, I sincerely thought this was some sort of random misinformation.
Then I googled the term and came up with this advertizement:
“Cheap Steel Chemistry Lab Table Top Ductless Perchloric Acid Fume hood with accessories $900.00 each with accessories”
Photos, color choices, and delivery details were provided on the ad which cannot be attached to this email sent to this forum.
Wow!
There are plenty of reasons to be scared to death about the ability to have such an item pop up for sale anywhere in the universe. I just pray that purchasing agents do not get
in a rush to order a product they have only marginal knowledge about. In our business, this unfortunately happens frequently. Especially when the price is low.
Clearly, explosive peroxide formation with carbon filter material and residue issues are well known with perchloric acid reactions. I am also sure stuff like this happens all
the time on many fronts with lab safety items.
Please, PLEASE, contact any reputable manufacturer regarding perchloric acid fume hoods and get more details regarding what one needs to exhaust such procedures safely.
