I am helping to organize two technical symposia for the CHAS program in San Diego this August. The ACS abstract system at
https://callforpapers.acs.org/sandiego2019/CHAS is now open for submissions, with a deadline of March 25 (note that this is before the Orlando meeting opens). The two symposia I'm organizing are:

CHAS 40th Anniversary Symposium

CHAS was established in 1979 as a technical division of the ACS, although not without controversy (see http://dchas.org/2017/08/03/working-safely-at-the-frontiers-of-science/ for details). We'd like to look back at the changes that have taken plan in both the chemical safety and lab safety world over the last 40 years. Since there aren't many of us who remember life before RCRA, CERCLA, SARA, Prudent Practices, Safe Science, MSDS's, etc. you don't have to cover all 40 years of CHAS's existence, but we would like to hear what you've learned as laboratory safety has developed while you've been active in the field.

Connecting Professionalism, Safety & Ethics: The Opportunities & Challenges

This symposium will be co-sponsored by CINF and the ACS Committee on Ethics and will discuss the intersections between technical aspects and cultural aspects of chemical safety and how chemical safety considerations are impacted by ethical and professional considerations.

Thanks to everyone for their contribution to these discussions!
