Elks Point Road in Round Hill will be reopening shortly following a nearly four-hour closure due to a chlorine gas leak.
The leak occurred in a research and development building at the corner of Elks Point Road and U.S. 50, Eric Guevin, fire marshal with the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, told the Tribune.
The gas, which is toxic, was confined to a safety cabinet in the building.
While nobody was exposed to the gas, the leak did warrant a response from a four-county HAZMAT team. The necessary response prolonged the road closure, which is on the portion of Elks Point Road adjacent to the Round Hill Shopping Center.

CAMANCHE ‰?? The Camanche Fire Department responded Thursday to a chemical spill at a local business.
The Camanche Fire Department was dispatched to Hawkins Chemical Company, 2619 Industrial Park Drive, Camanche, for a hydrochloric acid leak. Fire crews found that a railcar of hydrochloric acid, which was being unloaded, had a connection break that allowed product to leak onto the ground. Davenport Haz-Mat was notified prior to the Camanche Fire Department's arrival.
Fire crews, along with the Camanche Police Department, secured the scene, and nearby businesses were notified of the situation. Responders from Hawkins Chemical Company were able to stop the leak and contain the spill.

A busy on-ramp is back open after a chemical spill forced it to close for the second time in a week. The on-ramp leading from Lower Silver Road to southbound U.S. 75 Highway in Topeka was closed for more than two hours Thursday morning.
It was closed while the Topeka fire department was investigating a chemical spill. Fire officials said the materials were not a health threat. The on-ramp reopened after Kansas Department of Transportation crews cleaned up the spill.
Last Friday, another spill happened on northwest Lower Silver Lake Road just west of U.S. 75 Highway. Those chemicals were deemed hazardous and killed several animals.

MAJOR FIRE AT HOUSE-CUM-FACTORY

A major fire broke out in a house-cum-herbal products manufacturing unit at Upkar Nagar this evening. More than 12 fire engines were pressed into service. The firemen were on their toes when the reports last came in.
The factory, Herbal House HTI Experts, is owned by Dr Rajesh Thaper.
Srishti Nath, station fire officer, said the fire started around 4 pm. After the fire brigade was informed, fire engines immediately reached the spot.
He said chemicals were reportedly stored in the house-cum-factory due to which the fire could not be controlled easily. Since there were no fire-fighting arrangements at the unit, the employees failed to control the fire at the initial stage.
He said seven firemen had a close shave when there was a blast in the burning house. He had asked the factory owner if there was any cylinder or inflammable chemical lying inside the unit. Had the firemen stood close to the point where the blast took place, they would have suffered serious injuries. ‰??The exact cause of fire is still unknown,‰?? he added.

NEWARK, DEL.
Authorities say no one was injured when a fire broke out inside a University of Delaware biomedical engineering building.
University spokesman Peter Bothum tells The News Journal that the only student inside the building Wednesday night was mixing hydrochloric and nitric acids when the fire started. Bothum says damage was largely contained to a water bath and a fume hood. It's still unclear what caused the fire.
Aenta Hose Hook and Ladder Deputy Chief Jeff Sands says the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Hazmat teams were called in as a precaution.
Hazmat crews were previously called to the campus in September, when two graduate students were injured in a chemical lab explosion.

Despite the recent warning by the Nigeria Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association (NLPGA) on the need for stringent enforcement of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) standards in the country, the harvest of death continues as more and more Nigerians fall victims to gas explosions. In October of the year just ended, no fewer than 11 persons in Abuja suffered various degrees of burns from a gas explosion. A month earlier in Lafia, Nasarawa State, dozens were left dead with hundreds injured when a gas tanker exploded and started a blaze.
Three years ago there was a gas explosion when a chlorine cylinder exploded at the Plateau State Water Board treatment plant at Lamingo, Dogon Karfe, Jos South Local Government Area, leaving eight people dead, among them a pregnant woman and children. Dozens of others sustained varying degrees of injuries. Dr. Philemon Golwa, the Chief Medical Director of Plateau State Specialist Hospital, said that a leakage at the plant was responsible for the deaths as residents around the area inhaled the poisonous gas which enveloped the entire neighbourhood.
