Several years ago I bought the chemventory system for use at Western Technical College in LaCrosse Wi. However, since many of the organic chemicals I purchased and used were not available from Flinn, and there is no easy way to add chemicals from other companies to Chemventory, I ended up scraping it. It was just too much work to enter chemicals that Flinn didn=E2=80™t sell. I tried making an Excel spreadsheet myself, with the same columns as Chemventory, at the suggestion of Flinn's tech support, to later upload into chemventory, and that didn't work well either.
I decided after many months of trying to make Chemventory work that I had wasted the College's money, and a lot of my own time.
If you only purchased chemicals from Flinn, the system would be great. It's really easy to add their chemicals to the data base, easy to enter amounts used, and easy to set up reminders to order more when running out. None of those are easy for chemicals Flinn does not sell. About 1/3 of my 600 or so bottles of chemicals came from companies other than Flinn. So for me, the program was a waste of time and money.

If this is the Flinn Chemventory system: have you been able to add chemicals to it that Flinn does not stock? I have run into a bit of frustration with the system when I try to get a label or add an item they don't recognize.

Just last week, my staff (cleanroom environment involved with nano-fabrication) got a presentation on ChemInventory. I'm unsure of the cost, but we appear to be adopting that system soon. The benefits are that system administrators can grant access with varying levels of user-ability (read-only mode, ability to make order requests, etc..) to anyone involved with chemicals you have, and the system even contains safety data for every chemical in your possession.

I know this topic has been discussed before, but things change very quickly so I thought I'd ask what current opinions are. We are a small state university with 5 full time faculty. Interest has been expressed in getting a scan/bar-code based inventory system. What do those of you in small schools think about them? Which current systems seem to work best? at what approximate cost? In other words, please pass on any info you have.
