Overheated brakes on a school bus are being blamed for noxious fumes that sent 15 elementary school children to hospital for assessment Thursday morning. ‰??Overheated brakes ‰?| are the probable cause of the nausea and respiratory problems suffered by the 15 children from Lamoureux school,‰?? the Conseil des Ì©coles catholiques du Centre-Est said in a tweet. Paramedics reported that up to 40 children were aboard the bus as it arrived at the school on Kaladar Avenue in the Heron Park neighbourhood on Thursday morning. A total of 15 children aged six to 12 were taken to hospital with symptoms including a cough, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting.

According to the Oklahoma City Fire Department, a Sulfur Dioxide alarm went off at about 5 p.m. at Baker Hughes company near North Santa Fe and Northwest 122nd Street.
The building was evacuated as a precautionary measure, Officials said.
An ‰??all clear‰?? was given just after 7:30 p.m. and people were allowed to go back inside.

The festival of lights on Wednesday turned into a nightmare for five children who were seriously injured while they were making a 'desi' cracker by using potassium nitrate and other chemical.
One of the five children, all in 11 to 15 year group, lost his hands, another had his legs badly mutilated while three others received serious burn injuries at local Shiv Colony.
As per residents, an explosion occurred when the kids were beating the chemical in mortar and pestle for using it in a cracker.
The children were all alone at the roof of a house as family members were busy in Diwali preparations. They came to know about the incident when they heard a loud explosion.

JOHANNESBURG - Ekurhuleni Emergency Services say they‰??re investigating the cause of an explosion at a chemical factory in Boksburg.
Four people were seriously injured in the blast that was allegedly caused by a chemical reaction.
Emergency management services spokesperson William Ntladi says all four victims were rushed to a hospital.
Ntladi says there are many substances in that area that could have caused the accident.
‰??The 210-litre drum containers, which were inside the workshop where the ones which physically ripped off the roof of the workshop. We managed to contain and sustain everything, and the fire was extinguished,‰?? Ntladi said.

The investigation into the fire that ravaged a plastic manufacturing unit at Manvila recently has thrown up confusion regarding the jurisdiction of the Factories and Boilers Department and the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services over enforcing fire safety regulations.
Besides recording the inadequacies in fire-fighting capabilities, the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services has found that the company had failed to obtain the requisite fire safety clearance.
A. Hemachandran, Director General, Kerala Fire and Rescue Services, said the company that had begun functioning in 1998 was yet to apply for a no-objection certificate (NOC).
‰??With fire safety provisions of the National Building Code being incorporated in the Kerala Municipal Building Rules and Kerala Panchayat Building Rules, it is mandatory for industrial buildings to obtain NOCs from the fire force. The Factories and Boilers Department should take the initiative in insisting on the fire safety clearance whenever industrial units sought their annual clearance,‰?? he said.

Officials on the Rock Island Arsenal are confirming a hazardous material spill occurred Wednesday, but they offered few details, including the identity of the chemical involved.
The incident occurred before noon at the Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center, or JMTC.
A news release indicates no one was injured or exposed, adding, ‰??nor was there any threat to property or the environment.‰??
Conversations on fire and police scanners during the incident indicated that other departments were called to assist, and the Arsenal Fire Department specifically requested hazmat vehicles and equipment. At one point, someone at the scene indicated a headcount had been taken after at least one building was evacuated.
‰??It is believed a valve broke, releasing the material,‰?? according to the news release by a spokeswoman for the JMTC. ‰??The spill was immediately noticed by the wastewater treatment plant operator and reported. The Hazardous Materials team was activated and the release was stopped by them. The release occurred in a containment area specifically designed for these incidents.‰??

OIL TANK CATCHES ON FIRE AT CARGILL PLANT IN OHIO

Firefighters were called to a Cargill corn milling plant in Dayton, OH on Wednesday morning after a 210-gal oil tank caught on fire, several local news organizations reported.
Hazmat teams and fire crews were sent to the scene at about 7:10 a.m., but did not observe smoke or fire when they arrived, according to coverage by the Dayton Daily News. The newspaper said the tank involved in the fire was close to empty when the fire occurred.
Crews put out the fire inside of the facility, officials told television news station WDTN, and no injuries were logged during the incident. News broadcaster WHIO said firefighters deployed foam to extinguish the blaze.

One person was treated for minor skin irritation after a package containing caustic soda broke open at the United States Post Office in Maricopa Wednesday morning.
The substance, also known as lye or sodium hydroxide, apparently spilled onto the arm of a postal employee, causing what the Kern County Fire Department described as a minor skin irritation.
The woman was treated by washing the affected area with large amounts of water and didn‰??t require further treatment, firefighters said at the scene.
Two other people, a carrier in Maricopa and an employee at the Taft Post Office who may have been exposed to the substance, were also checked but were found to be unaffected, firefighters said.

Decades-old, disintegrating and dangerous chemicals lurk in the back of cupboards and shelves in high schools throughout Oregon.
A state program aims to get them out. For a decade, the Department of Environmental Quality has hired an environmental consultant to examine every bottle and can in science and art classrooms, and paid a hazardous waste disposal company to remove those deemed dangerous.
Last week alone, a visit to Sweet Home High School resulted in the removal of fully half the containers in the science lab storeroom, the consultant, Dave Waddell, said.
And a visit to North Marion High School ended in an Oregon State Police bomb squad being called to safely remove and destroy two dangerous chemicals.

Representatives for the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport say no one was injured ‰?? and no schedules were impacted ‰?? after a fuel tanker spilled what was reported to be thousands of gallons of fuel near an airport hangar on Tuesday morning.
The Cleveland Fire Department responded to calls of a fuel spill shortly after 5:30 a.m., Fox 8 Cleveland reported. The leak had been stopped by shortly after 6 a.m., the department confirmed on Twitter.
Cleveland Fire had initially reported that 10,000 gallons of fuel were spilled on the tarmac, but later clarified that only about 5,500 gallons were lost.

Ottawa Fire says hazmat teams are managing the scene of a reported chlorine leak at Centennial Public School on Gloucester St..
The school says chlorine fumes were detected shortly after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday and students and staff evacuated to the nearby Bronson centre.
School officials say they will not be able to return to classes Tuesday. Students are being sent home. Parents can pick up their kids at the Bronson Centre.

MAN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH DOWNTOWN BREMERTON EXPLOSION

Police have arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with an "explosive device" that went off in downtown Bremerton on Oct. 31.
Bremerton police arrested the man on suspicion of "malicious explosion of a substance" and reckless endangerment, according to a Kitsap County courthouse notice. He is being held on $50,000 bail.
At about 1:45 p.m. Oct. 31, Bremerton police were called to an alleyway between Fifth and Sixth streets after reports of an explosion. No one was injured.
Washington State Patrol's Bomb Squad and the FBI were assisting BPD with the investigation. Police said last week that the final determination of the type of explosive would be determined by a laboratory, but reported evidence was consistent with "low explosive powder."
Part of the device dented an unoccupied vehicle nearby; other parts of the device traveled more than 100 feet and landed on a sidewalk on Sixth Street. The explosion set off car alarms and appeared to leave a mark on the pavement. Police reported it also caused a two-inch by two-inch chip in a nearby wall.
