STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The FDNY reported multiple minor injuries after a hazmat incident at the Oakwood Beach Wastewater Treatment Plant Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency personnel initially responded to the scene at around 2:10 p.m. for reports of a contamination incident, a spokeswoman for the FDNY said.

Seven people were treated for minor injuries. The incident was placed under control by 2:53 p.m., and personnel were investigating for further exposure, the spokeswoman said.

A spokesman for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, which operates the facility, said there was a ‰??small chemical reaction in the laboratory,‰?? and that six people were taken to the hospital with no interruption to plant operations.

Mumbai: A worker was injured in an explosion at the Taloja Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area of Navi Mumbai on Monday morning. Police said the incident occurred at 8.15am, when the JCB machine, was digging a hole to dispose of toxic chemical waste. JCB machine‰??s excavator bucket hit the drum it was going to bury, resulting in a blast. The tremors caused were felt in the nearby villages, as far as Kalyan.

‰??The explosion was so massive, the JCB machine flew right out of the pit and landed upside down, a few metres from it,‰?? said supervisor Vidyakant Mishra. ‰??Since I was away checking other operations, I escaped unhurt. However, the JCB machine driver , Santosh Patil, 42, sustained serious injuries,‰?? said Mishra.

The industrial waste collected from Mumbai and neighbouring places is dumped on Taloja MIDC land. Police said on Monday, when workers were dumping the chemicals that had been separated from the industrial waste on land owned by the Mumbai Waste Management Ltd, they realised there was an emission from one of the drums.

MANISTEE ‰?? Police identified the hazardous chemical found during a death investigation at First Street Beach over the weekend.

Authorities were called to First Street Beach around 9 a.m on Sunday, when a couple found a man lying unresponsive on a cot, near the water‰??s edge.

Tim Kozal, Manistee director of public safety, said sodium azide was contained in a white bottle inside of the 27-year-old Mancelona man‰??s vehicle. His vehicle was impounded, and a search led to the discovery of the toxic chemical.

On Sunday, emergency responders were decontaminated and evaluated at Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital. One officer was kept overnight and released on Monday.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, sodium azide is a rapidly acting chemical that can be deadly when mixed with water or an acid and exists as an odorless, white solid.

A Hazmat team was called in and first responders decontaminated after a body was found on a Manistee beach.
Sunday, police and rescue crews responded to the First St. Beach for the reports of a body being found.
Once on scene, responders found the body of a 27 year-old Mancelona man at the beach.

During their investigation, hazardous chemicals were found and, as a precaution, officials were decontaminated and evaluated.
One officer was also admitted to Munson Manistee overnight as a precaution, but all others were released Sunday.
A Hazmat team and industrial environmental experts looked into and cleaned the man‰??s belongings that may have been exposed to chemicals.
There is currently no threat to the public, but those with information are asked to contact the police at 231-723-2533.

A man pleaded not guilty Monday to felony charges of illegally disposing hazardous materials as related hazmat investigations spanned throughout the county.
The Environmental Protection Agency told NBC 7 the man was trying to extract gold from ore and other metals using mercury and illegally disposed the material.
Michael Starr, 49, left a short-term rental house in Pacific Beach in disarray in early October, according to prosecutors.
When clean-up crews came in, they noticed awful smells coming from the oven and called the police.
While bomb and arson investigators found no threat, law enforcement found signs of mercury having been illegally disposed down drains and in trash chutes.
Prosecutors said Starr also contaminated a house on La Jolla Farms Road with mercury.
Starr cooperated and led law enforcement to Golden Triangle Self Storage in Sorrento Valley, where he was storing mercury and other chemicals.

SENATOR CRITICISES TSCA IMPLEMENTATION AS A 'REMARKABLE DISASTER'

The implementation of the amended TSCA under the Trump administration has been a "remarkable disaster" according to one of the architects of the 2016 legislation that updated the law.

Speaking at a 19 October forum hosted by Harvard's public health school, Senator Tom Udall (D‰??Arizona) said passage of the Frank R Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act put in place a law that began the process of fixing "a chemical safety law that was broken".

But despite the new law being strong, the Trump administration had been trying to "roll back what TSCA is trying to do". This, Mr Udall said, undermined its very purpose: to implement a system to protect science and public health.

What is important, he said, "isn't just the law, it's the implementation of the law, and it's the regulations that specifically focus in on the science and the public health ‰?? making sure we get all of it right."

ORLANDO, FL ‰?? Dozens of workers were evacuated from a baking company Sunday morning due to a carbon monoxide alarm and at least one person was taken away from the building with chest pains. A Hazardous materials team has been sent to Turano Florida Bun on the 100 block of Martin Brower Road, Orange County Fire Rescue told Patch.

Forty people were forced to leave the address. Further details weren't immediately available.

According to the business's website, the bakery makes artisan breads including ciabatta and focaccia, as well as a variety of rolls. The breads are delivered every day throughout the Chicago area and the country.

Turano did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. No one at the company answered the phone Sunday afternoon.

Almost a million drivers on Australian roads are at a huge safety risk due to dodgy airbags that have been described as ‰??ticking time bombs‰??.

Even in the most minor of fender benders, these cheap airbags can explode without warning, sending shards of metal at 300km/h into unsuspecting drivers and passengers, resulting in horrific injuries and even death.

The airbags, produced by a major automotive parts company called Takata, contain the volatile and unstable ‰?? yet cheap ‰?? chemical, ammonium nitrate. It is in no other airbags.
