From: Jeffrey Lewin "What I also find important is the integration of shared rooms that house shared equipment such as centrifuges, scintillation counters etc." I second this and encourage getting PI's to think about lab design and operations outside their assigned space: - Shared modular lab facilities; "temporary" assigned shared spaces with challenges in safety, supply management, and security. - Moving analytic equipment out of individual labs to shared/core facilities. Accessing, moving samples to and from, and chemical management of these facilities. Separation of prep spaces ("dirty spaces") from analytical ("clean spaces").
- Life cycle management of gas cylinders; delivery, storage, segregation, lab use, and return; safety, security, and tracking.
- The ability to isolate laboratories, hallways, and offices for safety, security, government regulations, industry secrecy agreements, etc. Providing offices and conference spaces for visitors, family, and pupils/students outside secure areas.
- Swipe card access vs. keys.
- Loading dock management; docks designed for receiving that soon become storage area for gas cylinders, recycling bins, trash cans, snow removal equipment, carts and dollies, and anything else someone doesn't have a place to store.
