Just because the 1981 standard is the one specified by law does not mean your institution cannot apply a more recent version as long as the requirements of the legally specified one are not directly contradictory.

Teri (and others),

Yes, I meant Z358.1, apparently my fingers and brain weren’t moving at the same speed (not an unusual occurrence unfortunately).  Thanks to everyone for the incredibly rich responses and offers to help!   The link to Cal/OSHA reliance on the 1981 standard was of particular interest.  It seems to imply that even though everyone knows the 1981 standard is outdated, the law still requires that standard.  Also thanks to all the references to document delivery and interlibrary loan resources.  Being at a community college (with no interlibrary loan agreements) limits my access to these references, but thanks to this listserv, I think I have what I need to move forward.

Regards,

Robert

Are you looking for Z358.1, rather than Z538.1?

ANSI has Z358.1-2014 (American National Standard for Emergency Eyewash and Shower Equipment) for sale on their website, for $60: https://webstore.ansi.org/RecordDetail.aspx?sku=ANSI%2fISEA+Z358.1-2014. Plus some other sources online, like Understanding the ANSI Z358.1-2014 Standard for Plumbed and Portable Eyewash Stations.

I didn’t find the historical standard for sale from ANSI or the other online standards stores like Techstreet. Some libraries own the standard, like UCSF (http://ucsfcat.ucsf.edu/search/o9364601), if SDCCD’s library can request via interlibrary loan (or SDPL). Looking online, I found a possible scanned copy on Scribd, but you’d need to set up a free trial to download it (https://www.scribd.com/document/80168690/ANSI-Z-358-1-1981-Eyewash-Shower#). The Linda Hall Library also has the 1981 standard (http://catalog.lindahall.org/LHL:Local_LHL:LHL_VOYAGER905673), and they have a fee-based document delivery service: https://www.lindahall.org/document-delivery/.

I also found several sites where someone was asking or commenting about the fact that the Cal/OSHA was still relying on the 1981 standard (example).

Sheila, is this something that campus EH&S, or the UC EH&S (or even Cal/OSHA) would have available?

Teri,

Can you help a neighbor at City College?

DCHAS,

I am in California and there seems to be some confusion in my organization regarding Safety Showers, Eye and Face washes in 8 CCR 5162 and the ANSI Z538.1 standard.  Specifically our regulations calls for the ANSI-1981 standard to be followed, but some in my organization insist that we should be following the latest standard, even though the regulations specifically state 1981.  This has some ramifications, specifically the 1981 standard calls for higher flow rates in safety showers and monthly testing whereas the newest standard calls for lower flow rates and weekly testing.

I have tried several resources within my organization to obtain the actual current and 1981 ANSI standards text, but I am unable to do so.  Can anyone point me to a source for more information (separate to manufacturers summary sheets), or offer some light on this matter?

Regards,

Robert
