ROGERSVILLE ‰?? Seven people, including two police officers, two firefighters and a paramedic, were hospitalized today after a liquid escaped from a vape pipe that a police officer confiscated, authorities said.
Rogersville Town Hall and the lobbies to the fire departments in Rogersville and Killen are closed as a precaution while forensics officials seek to identify the substance, Rogersville Police Chief Terry Holden said.
Officials sent the substance to the state forensics laboratory in Huntsville, which placed it on a fast tract, Holden said. He said officials there told him they hope to identify it today.
Police had confiscated a small amount of marijuana and the vape pipe during a traffic stop early this morning, Holden said. They are now seeking the person who was pulled over in the stop.

(Newswire.net -- August 28, 2018) --A 50 year old man was arrested on Tuesday after he confessed to the police that he was responsible for dumping over 10,000 pounds of used cooking oil in a vacant lot in Davenport, Florida. The result was a huge mess that accumulated in the empty lot near Sand Mine Road and U.S. Highway 27. According to county authorities and ACT Environmental, the company which assisted with the cleanup, the spill was the largest ever recorded in Polk County.
Polk County Fire Rescue/Hazmat, ACT Environmental, and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Hazmat Teams responded to the disaster. According to Polk County Sheriff, Grady Judd, Hazmat tested the sludge and determined it was not hazardous to the public.
Investigators traced the spill back to a pump truck that was discovered in close proximity to the scene. Agricultural Crimes detectives arrested the truck operator, Peter Rodriguez, charging him with two counts of commercial dumping.
Rodriguez admitted that he dumped the oil but explained that he was forced to do it, otherwise he claimed that he would have lost his job working for Brownies Septic and Plumbing. The company is, however, strongly denying this claim. Company representatives explained that the used cooking oil is regularly picked up and disposed of in Orlando, Florida where it is later sold and used for other purposes. As such, there was no reason for Rodriguez to dump it in the lot.
Rodriguez has been released from jail on a $2,000 bond.

15 Wichita Falls fire crews, including more than 20 off-duty firefighters, plus Sheppard Air Force Base firefighters, responded to the Plains All American Pipeline Tank off Harding Street, east of Wichita Falls.
In a statement to KFDX, Wichita Falls Fire Marshal David Collins said: "Plains All American Pipeline had contracted to have the vapor seal replaced on this tank. During the replacement of the vapor seal, the product in the tank became involved in fire."
Although crews have the fire contained, around 10:30 a.m. Monday, Wichita Falls Fire Chief Jon Reese stated crews fighting the fire near the top of the 5 million gallon crude oil tank had to get off.
"That tank is 60 to 70 feet high. And there's about a three foot catwalk with no side rails. So, it's a little bit dicey getting firefighters up there," Reese explained. "They made a valiant effort. They were within six feet of extinguishing it. And that's when we made the decision to abandon the tank."
At that time, the fire had burned off between six and eight feet of the crude inside the tank. Firefighters did not have enough foam and water to put the fire out, so Reese said they called in a specialized foam unit from the Houston/Beaumont area.

LYNN ‰?? Firefighters and a state hazardous materials team cleaned up a potential chemical spill inside an 18-wheeler parked off of Boston Street Monday afternoon.
A UPS driver was making a delivery just after noon when he noticed a chemical smell inside his truck‰??s trailer, according to Lynn Fire Chief Stephen Archer. The driver immediately closed the truck, parked it deep in a lot, away from the street and businesses, and called the fire department.
‰??He did everything right,‰?? Archer said. ‰??He did what he was supposed to do.‰??
At no time was the public in danger from the chemical, Archer said.
There were eight 55-gallon drums of chemical inside the truck‰??s trailer, according to Archer. While the driver and firefighters on scene didn‰??t see any leaked chemicals, the state‰??s Department of Fire Services Hazardous Material Response team would determine what, if any, cleanup was required.
State investigators believe the chemical involved is triethylamine, a chemical compound used in creating resins, epoxies and other materials. Exposure to the chemical‰??s vapor can lead to ‰??eye irritation, corneal swelling, and halo vision,‰?? according to guidance from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Smoke from several wildfires burning in the western part of the United States has found its way to New Hampshire.
And while experts say the health and environmental risks for the state are minimal, if any, right now, that could change depending on weather conditions and the duration and severity of the fires.
‰??It‰??s a great example of how environmental problems we see on the news are not just local but can have national impact, as the large amount of soot from the wildfires out West travels the jet stream, Nora Traviss, an associate professor of environmental studies at Keene State College, said last week. ‰??Since New England is literally the tailpipe of the nation, we can get downstream effects.‰??
While an unhealthy level of smoke from the fires is not affecting New Hampshire residents at ground level, the soot can be deposited in small amounts in forests and rivers, she said.
‰??Historically, this is how acid rain occurred in New Hampshire, when rain washes down sulfate particles in the air generated from coal burning in the Midwest,‰?? Traviss said. ‰??While wildfire soot particles are very low in sulfate content, they do contain higher nitrogen dioxide and nitrate content, which can contribute to acid rain effects in the environment.‰??
As of late last week, wildfires continued to burn in several western states ‰?? California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Utah among them. Of the fires in California, the Mendocino Complex blaze, which began July 27 and is made up of two wildfires, has been dubbed the largest in that state‰??s history, having charred more than 410,000 acres.

A blog posting on developing a educational atmosphere in a high school chemistry class includes safety instruction.
I would like to share my thoughts about positive relationships as well as some of the activities that I do on the first day of school to make connections with my students. If your school year has already begun, remember that it‰??s never too late to reflect on ways to improve classroom climate. A teacher can hold a class meeting at any point during the year to talk with students about what‰??s working and what isn‰??t.

The 1975 International Conference on Recombinant DNA Molecules held at the Asilomar Conference Center in California has cast a long shadow. Groundbreaking at the time, the meeting of scientists to develop guidelines on DNA research remains the template for forums on the safe and ethical use of biotechnology.
‰??We wanted at Asilomar to bring together largely the science community because we were not planning to deal with some of the bigger issues that come up around genetic modification,‰?? such as defense security and social justice, says biologist David Baltimore, former president of California Institute of Technology and one of the meeting organizers.
‰??We really were looking at safety issues, and we felt the community with the expertise to do that was the scientific community,‰?? Baltimore says. His partner in organizing the meeting was Paul Berg, professor emeritus of biochemistry at Stanford University. The meeting was sponsored by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering & Medicine.
Baltimore and Berg continue to be involved in similar conferences, notably the National Academies‰?? 2015 summit on genome-engineering ethics, a gathering where the focus was on ethical deployment of the technology and where social scientists, ethicists, and others were represented as well as genomics researchers. The spirit of that summit and other recent meetings, Baltimore and Berg say, has been the spirit of 1975.

CHEMICAL SAFETY TRAINING FOR SCIENCE TEACHERS

Academic science laboratories can be unsafe places for teaching and learning due to risks associated with biological, chemical, and physical hazards The OSHA laboratory standard (29 CFR 1910.1450) requires all employees working in laboratory settings (including special education teachers and paraprofessionals) to undergo safety training before they enter the lab. This is to ensure employees are cognizant of and know how to work with chemical hazards in the work area.
According to the standard, safety training must take place at the time of the initial work assignment and prior to assignments involving new chemical exposure situations. Laboratory workers must be provided with information and training relevant to the physical, biological, and chemical hazards present in their laboratory.

PROTOCOL EASES SEARCH FOR MIXTURE TOXICITY DATA

protocol to address the thorny problem of predicting how different chemicals and environmental pollutants combine to increase or decrease toxicity has been published by a team of researchers from the U.K. and the European Commission (EC). Chemicals‰?? toxicity is often simply added to predict the overall toxicity of a mixture. But to better support regulatory efforts, EC‰??s Joint Research Centre (JRC) wanted to know how often this additive method is correct and how often overall toxicology deviated from the assumption. Olwenn Viviane Martin at Brunel University London and her colleagues, along with JRC experts, developed their protocol to review 10 years of research on how different toxic chemicals might interact and alter toxicity when present in the same environment (Zenodo 2018, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.1319759). The search strategy they developed has 65 search terms. ‰??Vocabulary around mixture toxicology is fiendishly unspecific,‰?? Martin says. The protocol has revealed m!
ore papers reporting toxicity studies of mixtures than Martin and her colleagues expected, she says.
