A couple come to mind.
Instant Coke which is an iodine/starch clock reaction. Very cool.
Elephant toothpaste which is messy fun.
And my personal favorite - instant fog BLEVE (boiling water into tub of LN2 - demonstrator will get wet but it's impressive).
If you want the write-ups, let me know. None of them generate hazardous waste or fire. We do them in our outdoor courtyard all the time.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Chemistry Demos for Community
Hello All,
Our Chemistry Dept. has a community night, were they do demos. Typically, this has taken place in a lecture hall with a demonstration fume hood. Recently, our new science building came online, and the coordinator of this community
night would like to do the demonstrations in a public atrium area. I'm looking to the collective group for help. Do you have a demonstration that is low hazard, but HIGH cool factor that could be an option?
If you would like to contact me offline, my email is

Thank you so much for your help.
