ROCKLAND, MA ‰?? Rockland firefighters were called to a school after an old jar of sodium was discovered.
Rockland Fire says a teacher at the North River Collaborative School found the jar Tuesday afternoon while cleaning a cabinet in a science classroom.Upon arrival, firefighters located a cardboard box inside of a filing cabinet. Inside the box were multiple containers and jars containing a variety of leftover chemicals and substances from old science experiments.
Based on the appearance box and jars, it is believed that the sodium was there for years, if not decades.
After it was determined that the two-pound jar of sodium was determined to be a potential safety hazard and a regional hazmat team was requested to investigate. The sodium was taken to the Rockland Recycling Center, where it was deemed safe, according to Rockland Fire.
There were no leaks or spills from the box or jar. Other chemicals in the box were found and will be disposed of out of caution.

SAN BERNARDINO ‰?? A train derailment in San Bernardino caused several roads and a FedEx facility to be shut down for the remainder of the day.
On Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at around 9:20 a.m. numerous reports of a train derailment were made. It was reported that the derailment was in the area of the 7200 block of Cajon Boulevard. Several agencies responded to the scene including the San Bernardino County Fire Department, San Bernardino Police Department, and the San Bernardino County Sheriff‰??s Department. When the units arrived they found a freight train with thirteen tanker cars that had derailed.
Although there was no active fire or a visible vapor cloud, a 1000 foot radius was placed around the incident scene. Around 200 workers from the FedEx facility on Cajon Boulevard were evacuated from the property for the day. HazMat Specialists are working to control any leaks from at least two of the tankers. At this time they have tentatively identified the substances involved but confirmation is still pending. No detectable levels of any hazardous substance have been detected in nearby areas. No injuries have been reported to civilians or emergency responders.

COURT VACATES DELAY OF EPA CHEMICAL SAFETY RULES

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District Columbia on Friday vacated the 20-month delay of the Environmental Protection Agency‰??s updated rule on the safety of chemical plants, including those using ammonia.
The court vacated the EPA‰??s Delay Rule of June 14, 2017, which postponed the effective date of an update to its longstanding Risk Management Program (RMP)) until February 19, 2019. The updated RMP rule now goes immediately into effect.
The court described the rule‰??s delay as ‰??arbitrary and capricious,‰?? adding that it ‰??makes a mockery of the statute.‰??
‰??Today‰??s court decision is a victory for communities around the United States who have worked for years to win stronger protections from chemical disasters, said Earthjustice attorney Gordon Sommers, in a statement. Earthjustice represented the Union of Concerned Scientists, Environmental Integrity Project, and Sierra Club, among other groups, in the case.
The amended RMP rule (called the Chemical Disaster Rule of January 13, 2017) was developed during the Obama administration. It is an extension of the RMP, which regulates the safety of dangerous chemicals in industrial plants, including those with more than 10,000 lbs of ammonia. The new rule came about in response to a deadly ammonia fertilizer explosion at a plant in West, Texas, in 2013.
The suit against the delay was brought by New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman, who led a coalition of 11 state Attorneys General. Including those of New York, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.

An Apple store in Amsterdam has been temporarily closed after an iPad battery exploded and released harmful chemical substances.

Lab splashes and spills may be low-probability events and, as such, mitigation may appear to be sufficient. However, there is value in using setups and practices that contain, rather than just mitigate, splashes and spills. One driver for containment is that it helps prevent the additional dispersal of material by feet, hands, and other objects that contact undetected spilled or splashed material.
