Mixing worker experience levels for work activities provides valuable continuous training opportunities, however additional guidance and oversight during higher risk jobs is key for ensuring the less experienced worker's comprehension of what work is authorized and whose role it is to perform. An inexperienced Health Physics Technician, though fully trained and qualified, became radiologically contaminated while supporting housekeeping activities involving highly contaminated materials. The HPT indicated they understood contamination control from their training and qualifications (barrier use, body position), and would remember and apply this event in future work evolutions.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- An employee at the Chicago Rockford International Airport was transported to the hospital for precautionary reasons after a plane leaked fuel inside the AAR hanger around 10:45 Saturday morning.
RFD fire crews say employees were working on repairing a plane when a valve did not automatically close like it should causing an accidental active leak. Crews then removed the fuel from the plane.
The airport fire department, Rockford Fire Department and the Hazmat team were called in.
The airport fire department says four employees were directly affected by the fuel spill. No one was injured. One person was transported to a local hospital for precautionary reasons.

Poudre Fire crews cleaned up a chemical leak on Saturday afternoon that led to a fire that blew the door off a refrigeration unit.
Firefighters responded to the fire at about 12:15 p.m. when an employee of Wasson-ECE Instrumentation, 101 Rome Court, saw some smoke in the building. The company creates custom analytical tools.
The employee located the fire inside a refrigerator and used a chemical extinguisher to put it out, according to Battalion Chief Jim Pietrangelo. Only one employee was working in the building at the time of the fire.
Poudre Fire hazardous materials crews determined the cause of the fire was a spill of the chemical dichloromethylsilane.
That particular chemical, Pietrangelo said, was stored in an airtight container in the fridge. It can cause a fire when it comes into contact with the air.
The Larimer County Sheriff's Office responded to investigate at the request of Poudre Fire and did not suspect any foul play, he said.

THORNTON, Colo. ‰?? Rising temperatures across the Front Range may be to blame for a van explosion in Thornton that left a Thornton business owner injured Saturday morning.
Pictures of the charred van were tweeted by the Thornton Fire Department after they responded to what they initially called an ‰??incident‰?? in the area of E. 88th Avenue and Washington Street just before 7:15 a.m.
The van, which was used for a hardwood flooring business, caught fire after chemical supplies in the back exploded, according to a spokesperson from the Thornton Fire Department.
The spokesperson told Denver7 heat inside the van may have caused the explosion, which left the business owner injured. He was taken to a hospital for treatment; his condition is not known at this time.
Another van right next to the one that exploded was also damaged. That van belongs to the business owner‰??s girlfriend, the spokesperson said.
No other cars or nearby buildings were damaged.
The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental.

Hazardous Materials Teams working with the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have been working around the clock to secure and remove nearly 25 pounds of spilled mercury after a garage containing over 100 mercury-filled thermometers caught fire in Coronado earlier this week.
EPA Reveals New Information
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The extensive cleanup, which shut down 5th Street between Orange Avenue and D Avenue until further notice has left many residents wondering who is paying for the HAZMAT removal and use of city personnel.

Part of Karluk Street reopened Friday morning, after a powdered chemical spread along a sidewalk near Bean‰??s Cafe prompted a response from firefighters Thursday night.
Ron Alleva, the owner of nearby Grubstake Auction Co., said he put the chemical down Wednesday -- on ground near Karluk's sidewalk between 3rd and 4th avenues, an area directly across from Bean's where homeless people camp.
On Thursday, he claimed he had permission to do so from the city's Department of Health and Human Services.
