The ACS Division of Chemical Health and Safety is sponsoring a new workshop to educate graduate students about lab safety culture and opportunities for promoting safety in their schools. The workshop called "Developing Graduate Student Leadership Skills in Laboratory Safety" will be held at the Spring National Meeting on Sunday March 18th from 3-6 p.m.

This 3 hour workshop will be led by two PhD students with extensive safety program experience. It will describe these efforts at the University of Illinois and University of Minnesota as well as literature from the ACS and the National Academy of Sciences that describes the opportunities and challenges of safety culture in the academic environment. These topics will be followed by discussion of practical steps graduate students can take at their institution to support improved safety cultures. The workshop is sponsored by the ACS Committee on Chemical Safety and ACS Office of Graduate Education, with technical support provided by leadership of the ACS Division of Chemical Health and Safety. Participants will be awarded a "Graduate Student Safety Leader" certificate.
Space is limited! Priority registration deadline is February 10th, 2018. Register today for only $25 at: dchas.org/workshop-registration-page/. Contact jstworkshop**At_Symbol_Here**dchas.org for more information.

People working on their 2018 professional development plans may want to keep in mind the DCHAS workshop schedule found at
https://dchas.org/workshop-registration-page/
We have a couple of registrants already for the March New Orleans ACS national meeting, which is coming up soon.

Of particular note this year, we are piloting a workshop for graduate students interested in learning how to develop Joint Safety Teams at their home schools. The workshop will be led by grad students with this experience at the Universitys of Illinois and Minnesota. More information about this workshop can be found at
http://dchas.org/2018/01/12/grad-student-joint-safety-team-workshops-for-2018-acs-national-meetings/

Note that this workshop is co-sponsored by the ACS Offices of Chemical Safety and Graduate Education, so the registration fee is only $25, with registration preference given to graduate students until February 10. Please pass this information along to any chemistry or chemical engineering graduate students who you know may be attending the New Orleans meeting.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.
