I agree with Ralph. I am the only one who has to shut down my hoods every year for exhaust fan maintenance? We do it over the holiday break (I just closed out all of mine today) and have a set procedure that involves all depts. with hoods as well as EHS and Facilities. We also take this time to recertify the hoods once they come back up since this can affect flow.

My experience is that blanket statements such as these are not a productive approach to project management. Facility maintenance needs to be done and this will impact lab buildings. With this in mind, I wonder if is it possible that a power outage that impacts building ventilation could occur unexpectedly? (We had such an event here last month, despite emergency generator backup for our Science Building, and it has happened at all three schools I have worked at.) If so, then a contingency plan should be in place for this kind of event that can be applied to a scheduled event as well. And that contingency plan should reflect the actual chemistry processes being conducted, not a general sense that "organic chemistry requires ventilation".
