The International Fire Code limits the amount of chemical types to be to be stored in each control area.
These types include flammable liquids and solids, pyrophorics, toxics, corrosives, etc.
The first floor is allowed 100% of the limit per control area. The second floor is allowed 75%, the third 50% and the fourth through sixth floor is 12.5%.
This will limit the amount of chemicals to be stored and used.
With a sprinkler system you can double the amount.
There are too many nuances to be listed here.
The point is to keep the chemical storage and labs on the lower floors to accommodate these limits.
Hope this helps.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] New Science Building- Things to Look Out For
Hi Everyone,
We're in the planning process for a new science building (we're a two-year community college with a strong STEM reputation and a very small informal undergrad research program). Does anyone have any lessons learned or other recommendations
as we start working with the architects when it comes to planning out our chemistry labs?
Thanks!
