One of the common teaching points at fire extinguisher training that
I've had in two different locations (Iowa and Wisconsin) is that home
fire extinguishers should be purchased through a fire protection
products retailer rather than big box and hardware stores. The
dispensing mechanism is metal, not plastic, in the refillable
extinguishers from the special retailers. They should also provide the
refill service and a maintenance check to see if all the parts are
working correctly. That can't be done with the extinguishers purchased
through hardware outlets. Those are throwaways.
I've never wanted the feeling of grabbing an extinguisher and it
breaking apart in my hands. The refillable extinguishers cost almost
twice that of the plastic, but fire protection is not something that
stands up to going cheap.
Also, I'll take this opportunity to advocate that all chemistry
departments and industrial labs find the resources to train staff (and
if possible, students) in handling a fire extinguisher. There's no
substitute for facing a real fire (under instructional conditions) to
discover your fears and appreciate the power of a small extinguisher.
Sometimes you just can't wait for the fire department.
