PARKERSBURG WAREHOUSE FIRE EXTINGUISHED, OFFICIALS SAY

After burning for more than a week, a fire at a Parkersburg warehouse was extinguished Sunday, officials say.
Incident commander Mark Stewart, chief of the Lubeck fire department, said the remains of the fire at Intercontinental Export Import Inc.‰??s facility were put out around noon, according to Lawrence Messina, a spokesman for the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety.
Messina said a 36- to 48-hour cool-down phase has begun. Firefighters have stopped putting water on the site to check for flare-ups, he said.
Crews from Specialized Professional Services Inc. are still on the scene to help, and air-quality monitoring continues, he said.
The massive fire broke out early Oct. 21 at the former site of Ames True Temper tool factory in south Parkersburg. The fire prompted Gov. Jim Justice to declare a state of emergency in Wood County. The Wood County Commission also declared the scene a disaster area.
While no injuries were reported during the fire, state Health Commissioner Rahul Gupta said last week he needs more information, particularly the inventory of what materials burned in the fire, before officials will know about the long-term health effects of smoke and fallout of the fire.

SEVERAL PEOPLE SICKENED AFTER HAZMAT SITUATION AT PENNCREST HIGH SCHOOL

MIDDLETOWN TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- It was a chaotic scene at Penncrest High School in Middletown Township, Delaware County Friday night.
Crews were called to the high school at 134 Barren Road just after 10 p.m. to reports of people getting sick in the men's locker room.
Thirteen football players fell ill following their game against Radnor. Several were taken to the hospital.
A fire official tells Action News a ventilation system in the locker room malfunctioned.
"Upon arrival, crews discovered what we suspect to be an ozone machine in the men's locker room that was creating an irritant to a number of the football players," said Mark Kirchgasser.
Some of the players were taken to Riddle Memorial Hospital for treatment.

NO CONTACT ORDER FOR FREEPORT PUBLIC WATER AFTER INDUSTRIAL FIRE

BARRY COUNTY, MI -- Freeport has issued a no contact order for it's public water after an industrial fire caused water contamination.
The fire, at Ketchum Machine at 219 Oak St., happened about 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27.
Village officials said a valve failure caused fire retardant to breach the public water system.
On the city's Facebook page, officials say in bold lettering "Until further notice do not have contact with the water."
Village leaders say the Department of Environmental Quality has been notified. They plan to post updates on the situation to the Freeport Village web site.
In the meantime, drinking water can be picked up at the Freeport Fire Department.

EMERGENCY CREWS RESPOND TO ANHYDROUS LEAK ‰?? KIWARADIO.COM

Hull, Iowa ‰?? There were a few tense moments on Saturday morning near Hull when an anhydrous hose burst, sending the chemical out in a cloud in a farm field.
The Sioux County Sheriff‰??s Office reports that about 8:15 a.m., the Hull Fire Department responded to a report of an anhydrous ammonia leak that occurred in a farm field near the intersection of Highway 75 and 340th Street, three miles southwest of Hull.
They report that 36-year-old Nicholas Tentinger of Remsen was driving a John Deere 8335R farm tractor pulling a John Deere applicator with two 4,000 pound anhydrous ammonia tanks in the field. They report that a connecting hose ruptured and began discharging anhydrous ammonia.
When the Hull Fire Department got there, they relayed instructions through Sioux County
Communications, who was able to relay information to Tentinger about how to park and exit the tractor safely to avoid exposure.

ATOMIC PHOTOS REVEAL THE SCIENTIFIC REASON BEHIND EXPLODING BATTERIES

Exploding batteries have become one of the more prominent dangers of modern-day technology. Countless photos, videos, and stories of gadgets blowing up or catching fire due to a battery explosion have gone viral in recent years. Even large gadget manufacturers like Samsung haven‰??t been immune to these risks, with the Galaxy Note 7 getting pulled from shelves just last year following numerous reports of the above nature. But with scientists having found an explanation for these events, the new research might just have the potential to help tech companies create safe batteries that are hardly likely, if at all, to blow up.
In a attempt to explain why exploding batteries have become so commonplace these days, the researchers took what they claim are the first photos of a lithium battery blowing up at the atomic level. According to Popular Mechanics, a team of scientists from Stanford University and the SLAC National Laboratory snapped the photos with cry-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), a new technique that involves reducing the temperatures of samples to a few degrees above zero by dipping them in liquid nitrogen, and using high-powered electronic microscopes to analyze them.

A major fire broke out in a chemical solvent godown in Narol on Saturday, killing the owner of the godown and injuring around ten firefighters. The godown was illegal and did not have required fire safety measures in place, according to official sources.
Jayesh Khadia, Divisional Fire Officer, said, "The reason behind the fire has yet to be ascertained. The FSL department is investigating further. We have found one body inside the godown."
The owner of the godown, which belonged to Vishnu Enterprises, located in Parshottam estate, behind Cozy hotel, has been identified as Pokar Ram Benoy, 40. A native of Rajasthan, Benoy used to reside in Ghodasar here.
The fire broke out around 1 pm at the godown. Five teams of the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Service department were deployed to douse the flames. The fire spread quickly because of solvent and thinner containers stored in the godown. Soon, more fire engines were dispatched to the spot, while a police team reached the spot to manage crowds. It took six hours and 21 firefighting vehicles to bring the fire under control and douse the flames. Firefighters were still trying to put out the burning embers till late night.

MIDDLETOWN >> Several people were sickened in the locker room of Penncrest High School following Friday night‰??s football game, officials said.
First responders and hazmat crews rushed to the scene after reports of an odor ‰?? possibly a chlorine leak ‰?? that sickened people. As many as seven people reported feeling light-headed and suffering bouts of severe coughing.
What caused the problem has net yet been determined but officials were looking into a possible chlorine leak. Several ambulances were dispatched to the scene, but it is not yet known if anyone was transported to the hospital.
Officials requested helicopters be brought in to clear the air above the high school.
The conditions of those sickened was not immediately available.
The situation occurred about 10 p.m. in the men‰??s locker room of the school off Barren Road after Friday night‰??s football game against Radnor High.

SUSSEX SEASIDE TOWN CHEMICAL ALERT AS NOXIOUS SMELL SICKENS RESIDENTS

People in Seaford in East Sussex are tonight being warned to keep doors and windows closed after reports of a noxious odour which is causing sickness.
The smell, described as ' burning plastic' was first noticed in the Ridings area at around 6pm but has failed to disperse.
Some have complained of stinging eyes and nausea.
In August a toxic haze caused similar discomfort to people in the Birling Gap area.
Police say it's unconnected, but are working with the Coastguard and Fire Service to find the cause

DEP ORDERS ANSWERS TO WHAT BURNED IN PARKERSBURG WAREHOUSE

Five days after a massive fire began in a plastics warehouse in Parkersburg, West Virginia regulators on Thursday ordered the owner of the operation to identify what products stored there were burning.
The state Department of Environmental Protection also ordered Intercontinental Export Import Inc. to submit a plan ‰??for providing proof of proper disposal‰?? of the materials that burned at the warehouse, located in the former Ames True Temper tool factory, south of downtown Parkersburg. It also ordered the company to provide ‰??detailed inventories‰?? of material stored ‰??at all other sites in West Virginia‰?? that are owned by IEI and any associated companies.
The DEP issued a 27-page order and announced the move with a news release sent to the media by Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety Communications Director Lawrence Messina, who has said he is fielding all media inquiries for state and local agencies regarding the fire, which began sometime after midnight Saturday and has continued to burn since then.
The DEP order notes that IEI operates ‰??large warehouses and recycling facilities ... in and around Parkersburg.‰?? State officials have mentioned that there might be up to five such facilities, but it appears that only two of them have been publicly identified by authorities: The Parkersburg site that burned and another one, located in nearby Washington Bottom, that operates under a sister company called Polymer Alliance Resources.

RAGING RUBBISH ‰?? FIRE AT WASTE CONNECTIONS EXTINGUISHED QUICKLY

A small fire broke out at approximately 7 p.m. Wednesday at Waste Connections, apparently caused by a chemical reaction in a pile of trash workers had recently dumped at the site.
Duncan Fire Chief Dayton Burnside said Oakridge Volunteer Fire Department (OVFD) was first on the scene and reacted quickly to extinguish the flaming trash heap.
‰??They were first on scene, we just got a call to help them with a fire in Waste Connections‰?? main building,‰?? Burnside said. ‰??[The fire] was in the trash piles ‰?? it was all compacted up, the structure was saved but all [of] the contents of the pile was gone, it was put out in about 45 minutes.‰??
According to Jeff Bruehl, an officer for OVFD, firefighters weren‰??t alerted to the blaze in the traditional way with a call ‰?? in fact, they saw the flames themselves.

DOZENS DEAD AFTER INDONESIAN FIREWORKS FACTORY EXPLOSION

At least 47 people were killed and dozens others injured in a fireworks factory explosion near the Indonesian capital of Jakarta on Thursday. It was one of Indonesia's worst industrial disasters and is likely to cast a new spotlight on lax safety standards in the Southeast Asian country, where rules are often ignored or weakly enforced. Witnesses said a huge explosion was heard from the factory at about 10 a.m. and then smaller explosions echoed across the neighborhood as orange flames jumped from the building and a column of black smoke billowed from it. Another showed a body in a bag being taken away. "People were burnt so badly you couldn't see their faces". Police say the bodies of several women, including some suspected under-aged workers, were found piled up at the back of the factory. CHEMICAL SPILLED IN NEWTON VEHICLE ACCIDENT

NEWTON (JG-TC) -- Hazardous chemicals spilled when a semi-truck tipped over at approximately 5:58 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Route 130 and Clayton Avenue on the south side of the city.
Steve Bennett, Charleston Fire Department Chief, said that the Wade Fire Protection District who cover the area responded to scene initially. Later haz-mat crews from the area including Charleston and Mattoon responded to assist.
Bennett said truck tipped over when turning and landed itself partly in a ditch releasing some of the hazardous chemicals inside the tanker. These chemicals are used for manufacturing plastics and resins, according to Bennett.
Normally, these materials are solid, however, they are heated up to a liquid state when transported. Bennett noted that when the incident occurred the chemicals in and outside of the tanker solidified soon after.
Even so, local crews dammed the ditch to prevent any chemicals from reaching a waterway and closed off the area until crews cleaned up the chemicals, Bennett said.
Bennett said the chemical would've have acted as an irritant if exposed to skin.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, he reported.
