This is a career defining opportunity for an industrial hygiene professional to lead the chemical hygiene program of one of the leading medical research universities in the U.S.  Washington University’s graduate and undergraduate schools are highly ranked and the research profile of the institution is among the best in the nation.  The School of Medicine is one of the largest recipients of funding for research and training from the National Institutes of Health; during the 2015 fiscal year, grants and contracts totaling more than $531 million supported faculty research efforts.

The Director of the Office of Chemical Safety & Chemical Hygiene Officer manages the university’s chemical hygiene and chemical safety programs as required under OSHA, DOT, federal, state and local regulations and is responsible for laboratory inspections, the Reproductive Protection Program, and the OSHA Laboratory Standard Chemical Hygiene Plan program.  The CHO coordinates, or assist in coordination of Environmental Health and Safety training programs including web-based training, the Hazardous Materials Spill Response Safety and Training program, and the Chemical Shipping programs.  The position will serve as the Institutional Biological and Chemical Safety Committee (IBC) chemical/industrial hygiene/toxicology specialist and will do protocol chemical risk assessments.  Additional areas of responsibilities include supporting the Occupational Safety Office, managing the chemical inventory database system, supporting the Environmental Compliance Office and the EH&S emergency chemical spill response team and emergency preparedness planning.

Qualified candidates will have a bachelor of science degree in health sciences, basic sciences or related field and professional certification, with seven years of chemical safety supervisory experience at a large research or academic institution, or a minimum of a master of science degree in health sciences, basic sciences or related field, with a minimum of five years of safety supervisory experience. 

Preferred qualifications include PhD science degree in health sciences, basic sciences or related field, and professional certification (e.g. CIH, CHO (NRCC), CSP, PE, CBSP, CHP, CHMM).
