Jim,
We just had a pipe break on the exit side of a chip tank last week. This was a building size tank of about 500 gallons.
Yesterday, we had the pit area drained, as well as the tank. In this case, the tank had the normal limestone, plus a health amount of charcoal.
We just called in our waste contractor who sent a vac truck. Took about three hours from start to finish. 1 truck, three contractors, 3 on-staff plumbers. Cost under $3,000, but this was not a "scheduled" remediation.
If this was not an urgent matter, we would have used just our maintenance personnel and plumbers to replace the rocks and clean the tank.
