Yes, well... Section 3.1.5 of the second edition of "Laboratory Safety for Chemistry Students" is titled "Interpreting SDS Information." The three-page prelude to a section-by-section description of the SDS format is a discussion of the history of MSDSs/SDSs that reveals some cautionary limitation of using these (necessary() documents. The "boxed" item on page 3-157 also discusses "Silly and Not-so-silly MSDSs." These pages address the issues or "usefulness" and "quality of information."
The usual disclaimer: Bob Hill and I co-authored this book. Bob and I will be momentarily heartbroken if folks just photocopy the three relevant pages and share with their students, but we'll get over it!

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Limitations of SDS?
I wonder if anyone has a favorite article that describes the limitations of MSDS's and/or SDS's in terms of the quality and value of the information they contain. I've had lots of conversations with KSC students on this topic and it would be helpful to be able to provide a link to an article that addresses this issue. Google's giving me a blank stare.
Thanks for any help with this.
