Safety Comes First
An Occasional Newsletter
Issue 2
August 31, 2017

So what's new since the last newsletter ?
The Pistoia Alliance's Chemical Safety Library (CSL) has grown, both in the number of registered users, and in the number of hazardous reaction entries. We are very appreciative to those who have contributed to this important community experiment, and encourage you all to continue in your efforts and introduce others to the CSL. In today's newsletter, you will find tips, useful flyers, and details on our next phase: expansion and exploitation of the CSL data.

To help you tell others about CSL, please share this 1 page flyer with colleagues.
Remind them how important it is to capture hazardous reaction information and how easy it is using the CSL service.

Today's Handy Tip #1:  Check out the new  video on how to enter a new reaction

Fearful of sharing lab safety data? We have some answers to help alleviate your concerns

So far we have 108 hazardous reaction entries in the database, which is four times the number we started with. And over 10% contributions are coming from non-Pistoia Alliance companies.  This is most encouraging, but of course we continue to strive for more. Imagine if every registered user entered just 1 reaction, we would have a database of nearly 1000 entries!

So what is the reluctance to enter information about reaction incidents? We continue to work with the community to gather those concerns so we can address them head on. Three of those concerns, embarrassment, IP concerns, and data quality, have come up repeatedly, but should not be blockers to you participating. We have put together a 1page flyer to address these concerns, to help you make your case (see below).

1 Page Flyer - Sharing Reaction Information

For those still hesitant, please join us at the next ACS meeting, where we are organizing a panel discussion among legal, regulatory, EH&S experts and content providers to discuss how our community can successfully share safety incident information. For more information please contact the session organizer, Carmen Nitsche (carmen.nitsche**At_Symbol_Here**pistoiaalliance.org)

Today's Handy Tip #2: Check out the new video on how to enter a new reagent

The Next Phase of the Experiment Begins........ Exploitation of the Data
Now that we have delivered a way to capture reaction incident information, we are ready to implement strategies to increase the incident collection, and explore ways to exploit the increasing pool of data.

This Fall, with the help of our partners at the American Chemical Society Divisions of Chemical Health and Safety (DCHAS) and Chemical Information (CINF), we will be hosting a Datathon.  We will be inviting librarians, graduate students, EH&S professionals and others to scour the literature, and their own data collections and experiences for incidents that should be in CSL.   We look forward to some friendly competition as institutions vie to enter the most new incidents into the CSL.  More information will follow in the next newsletter.

To assist with data exploitation, we are developing an API covering key use cases in collaboration with Biovia. This API will be made available to support or our planned hackathon.  We want to see what creative ideas the community has for putting our data to work!  This is an experiment, so please join with us to understand where the value of CSL is and how we can make the most of the CSL service.

Today's Handy Tip #3:
Make sure you have all the relevant information you need to
complete your incident entry in one sitting. It will only take 2 - 3 minutes.

Known Outage - Resolved:
Thanks to those who alerted us to last week's system problem around reagent display.  We apologize for the service interruption.  The bug has been fixed and system is working again.

Call to action
As we approach the final quarter of the CSL experiment, we need your help just as much ever.  Please continue to spread the word, add your incidents, offer improvement suggestions, ask questions, and contribute your ideas on how to exploit the information for maximum value.  --..We are waiting !
