Job Summary: The Safety Specialist will provide safety expertise, leadership, and direction in campus
risk assessment, mitigation, and compliance with applicable regulations and safe work practices. The Safety Specialist serves as the primary internal resource for the University’s comprehensive tool, equipment and Shop Safety Program, the Powered Industrial
Truck Program, and the Ergonomics Program. This individual will be responsible for conducting job hazard analyses for tool use, mechanical systems, and materials handling equipment in shops and other locations throughout campus, performing regular safety inspections
and working with shop end users and supervisors to develop and implement hazard controls and safeguarding strategies. In addition to being responsible for the Shop Safety Program, this individual will work closely with the Safety Engineer in maintaining compliance
with current OSHA safety programs, including Confined Space Entry, Lock Out/Tag Out, Electrical Safety, Fall Protection, Ladder Safety, and Crane Safety. The Safety Specialist will serve as a mentor to EHS Safety Advisors and others in the areas of tool safety,
mechanical systems and equipment, ergonomics, and other physical safety issues. The successful candidate will also work with students and faculty in the review of student projects and activity proposals to identify potential safety hazards. The Safety Specialist
is part of a supportive, productive, team-oriented work environment that provides excellent customer service. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are a must.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field. Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in engineering, safety, relevant industrial or manufacturing work, or a closely
related field, and significant operational and/or safety experience with tools and equipment. Excellent writing, speaking, training and technical skills are required.
