Many thanks to all who answered and made suggestions about how to deal with this!
One responder noted that there are websites that will make a line drawing from a photo (Cool!)
As it turns out, ACS (our publisher) is an STM signatory, which facilitates permissions between publishers. I hadn’t found the correct place to put this information into the “request permission
to republish” website. Our lovely & talented chemistry (!) librarian set me on the right path & I’m good to go.

Sheila,
If all else fails, look at the manual/plate on the apparatus and search for patent numbers. Then pull the patent off the USTPO site.

Patient friends,
I do understand this isn’t a forum for lab equipment questions, but I’m running out of places to look and you’re all so helpful when you have a chance.
I want to republish a line drawing of a Fisher-Johns melting point apparatus, but I’m having trouble finding the owner to give me permission. I’ve seen it reprinted many times, including in Zubrick’s
Organic Chem Lab Survival Manual, but he says it’s not his.
If you have a clue about this old reliable (still works!), please let me know. If this drawing appears in the instrument manual, I’ll at least know who to talk to.
Sheila
