2 FIREFIGHTERS INJURED AFTER PAIR OF EXPLOSIONS FROM GASOLINE LEAK
Tags: us_IN, public, explosion, injury, gasoline
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. ‰?? A gun battle on the west side early Tuesday morning caused a fire and a pair of explosions, officials say.
According to the Wayne Township Fire Department, gasoline from a vehicle hit in the gunfire leaked into a storm sewer, causing an explosion and fire at a subsurface lift station at the Westlake apartment complex.
Wayne Township crews quickly got the fire under control. However, a second explosion occurred near a manhole, injuring two firefighters. Both were evaluated at the scene and released, according to Capt. Mike Pruitt with the Wayne Township Fire Department.
The Marion County Public Health Department and Wayne Township Hazmat were called to the scene.

TULSA, Oklahoma - Two employees are recovering after an explosion at the Honeywell Aerospace plant in Tulsa Tuesday morning.
The explosion blew a 30-by-60-foot hole in the top of the building. Fire crews said it could've been much worse.
"People thought it was thunder. And after the explosion, we saw the big cloud of black smoke," said ISTI Supervisor George Gonzalez. "We knew there was something, something wrong."
The Honeywell Plant at 6930 North Lakewood Avenue, just around the corner from where Gonzalez works, was on fire.
Investigators said a paint booth inside the building exploded. The blast was heard miles away.
"After that, we saw a whole bunch of firetrucks," Gonzalez said.
The first thing emergency crews saw was the hole in the ceiling of the plant and thick black smoke.

Fire crews were forced to evacuate Western University‰??s Spencer Engineering Building after a small fire broke out in a laboratory classroom.
The London Fire Department says firefighters were called to the building just before 3pm on Tuesday, after the fire started in a ventilation hood.
The fire was put out quickly, but around 25 people had to evacuate the building as a precaution due to the chemicals present in the lab. The fire department‰??s hazardous materials unit also attended the scene to ensure the building was safe to re-enter.
Damage to the classroom was minimal, fire officials say, adding that the all clear was given at around 5pm.

GARDEN SHED EXPLOSION VIDEO SHOWS WHY IT‰??S IMPORTANT TO STORE GAS CANS SAFELY DURING SUMMER

A British fire service has released dramatic footage of a garden shed explosion, which is acting as a reminder to homeowners to ensure gas containers are stored safely.
The video was captured by a home security camera in West Yorkshire and shows the roof and walls of the shed being blown off before flames quickly ignite.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the explosion, which happened in early June, was probably caused when a faulty fluorescent light fixture ignited vapours coming from gas containers or garden machinery.
Officials haven‰??t been able to determine the exact cause of the explosion due to the extent of the damage.
Health Canada recommends keeping products that may release harmful fumes or catch fire, such as paints, solvents, gasoline, fuels or varnishes, in a separate space from their homes.

12 PUPILS HOSPITALISED WITH SUSPECTED CO POISONING

Twelve pupils at the Manchester Grammer School in north west England were taken to hospital with suspected carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning during pool-based scuba diving lessons on Monday, 26 June.
One pupil remains in hospital where he is described as being in a 'stable condition', after a teacher gave him emergency oxygen as a result of the incident. The other 11 pupils have since been discharged.
A statement from the school's headmaster, Dr Martin Boulton, said: 'as part of our activities week, an external company was holding a scuba diving course in our swimming pool when two of the boys taking part became very unwell. Emergency services were called and the two boys were immediately taken to hospital by ambulance. Several of the other boys later felt unwell and were also taken. As a precautionary measure, the remaining boys who were on the course were also seen at hospital to determine whether they needed treatment. Our thoughts are with all the boys and their parents and we will continue to offer them support.'
The UKs Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the local police are investigating the matter.
'Detectives are investigating the incident with the Health and Safety Executive, and have been working with Public Health England to ensure that there is no wider risk to the public or diving community,' said Superindent Dave Pester of the Manchester police. 'The possibility that carbon monoxide was present in air tanks is being investigated.'

GAS FIRMS AIM TO COMPLY WITH NEW REGS

Operators of two western Colorado underground natural gas storage operations say they‰??re well on their way to complying with newly instituted federal requirements arising from a 2015 disaster in California.
The federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, or PHMSA, in December announced interim final rules applying to such operations. While the Trump administration has moved to provide more time for compliance with some aspects, Black Hills Energy and Xcel Energy say they‰??ve already taken measures consistent with the new rules.
Black Hills runs the Wolf Creek storage field in the Thompson Divide area southwest of Glenwood Springs, while Xcel runs the Asbury and nearby Fruita storage fields in the Bookcliffs in Mesa County as a single operation that it calls Asbury. Both operations make use of old gas production formations that have been depleted by drilling. The companies inject gas into them so it can be retrieved during winter months to meet heating demands in the region.
In October 2015, a well at a large underground gas storage facility at Aliso Canyon in Los Angeles began leaking, ultimately emitting 5.7 billion cubic feet of gas, and forcing thousands of residents to be evacuated due to health effects of the mercaptan odorant additive in the gas.
Congress responded in June 2016 by passing a law requiring PHMSA to issue regulations for underground gas storage facilities within two years, taking into account things like consensus standards for their operation and environmental protection. The agency decided it should issue an interim rule sooner, saying in the rule that the lack of PHMSA regulations for the facilities ‰??presents an immediate threat to safety, public health, and the environment because there is currently no effective means for the agency to ensure compliance with safety standards at underground natural gas storage facilities.‰??

LATVIA MAY ASK SWEDEN TO PAY FOR CLEAN-UP OF ILLEGAL WASTE DUMP AFTER FIRE
Tags: Latvia, public, fire, response, illegal, waste
RIGA - Latvia may ask Sweden to pay for the clean-up of the illegal waste dump in Latvia's seaside resort town Jurmala where hazardous waste allegedly brought from Sweden caught fire in mid-June.
Inga Kolegova, the head of the Latvian State Environment Service, told the press after the Crisis Management Council meeting today that, under the applicable EU regulation, it was the obligation of the country, which had sent its waste to another country, to either take waste back or to pay for the clean-up operation.
She said that the Swedish environmental agency had notified the Swedish law enforcement authorities so that the Swedish and Latvian competent authorities would work together to investigate the incident.
As reported, a highly dangerous fire started in the Sloka area in Jurmala on the afternoon of June 18 as plastic waste caught fire. Flames spread over the area of 1.2 hectares and consumed also a hangar. The fire that released dark clouds of potentially hazardous smoke was put out the following morning.

DIDION CEO UPDATES CAMBRIA VILLAGE BOARD
Tags: us_WI, industrial, follow-up, death, ethanol
CAMBRIA ‰?? Even as he talked about things like gratitude, healing, charity and rebuilding, John Didion wore the face of a man in mourning.
The chief executive officer of Didion Milling and Didion Ethanol came to Monday‰??s regular meeting of the Cambria Village Board, looking and sounding like a man who has been to five funerals in a little more than a month.
But he came, he said, bearing good news.
The Didion Milling facility, severely damaged by the May 31 explosion that resulted in five deaths, will be torn down starting next week ‰?? and not long after that‰??s done, work at the Didion Ethanol plant can resume.
All of the injured people who were hospitalized are recuperating at home now.
John Didion said many Didion employees, including those injured in the explosion, have used the services of mental health professionals trained to deal with trauma.
Asked about his state of mind, Didion admitted that the pain continues, for him, for Didion employees and for Cambria and surrounding communities.
‰??No question about it,‰?? he said. ‰??We‰??re family.‰??
At about 11:30 p.m. May 31, an explosion in the Didion Milling facility in Cambria rocked the Didion plant, and shook the walls and windows of many surrounding homes.
Dead are Didion employees Duelle Block and Robert Goodenow, whose bodies were recovered the day after the explosion; Pawel Tordoff, whose body was found June 2; Angel Reyes, who died June 6; and Carlos Nunez, who died June 23.
