WOMAN DEAD, 2 PEOPLE INJURED IN HAZMAT SITUATION IN MORGAN PARK

CHICAGO (CBS) ‰?? A woman died and two other people were injured Saturday evening in a hazardous materials situation in an apartment building in the Far South Side Morgan Park neighborhood.
Fire crews responded about 9:30 p.m. to a Level One HazMat situation involving high carbon monoxide levels at a first-floor apartment in the 11300 block of South Church Street and found 62-year-old Linda Russell, authorities said.
Russell was pronounced dead at 9:48 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner‰??s office. An autopsy Sunday found she died of carbon monoxide toxicity and inhalation of products of combustion from operating a gas generator in an enclosed space, and her death was ruled an accident.
Another woman was taken in serious-to-critical condition to MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island, the Chicago Fire Department said. A man was taken in fair-to-serious condition to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park. Their ages were not immediately known and additional details were not provided.
Area South detectives were conducting a death investigation, Chicago Police said.

NO INJURIES REPORTED IN HAZMAT SITUATION AT AURORA POOL

No one was injured during a hazardous materials situation Saturday evening at an aquatic center in west suburban Aurora.
Fire crews responded at 6:17 p.m. to the Phillips Park Family Aquatic Center, 828 Montgomery Rd. in Aurora, after an employee reported an unknown substance leaking from a small building next to the facility, according to a statement from the Aurora fire department. The situation was then upgraded to a Level II HazMat response and the Aurora Fire Department Hazardous Material Team responded to the scene.
It was determined that the leaking substance was hydrochloric acid, a chemical used to raise the pH of water in swimming pools, fire officials said. It was estimated that between 5 and 10 gallons of the chemical leaked from a 30-gallon poly tank.
The leak was caused by a 500-gallon poly tank that started to backfill after being refilled on Friday, fire officials said. It is not clear why the 500-gallon poly tank started to backfill with water from a pool water line, pushing the product into the 30 gallon poly tank and causing the spillage.

MAN HURT IN INCIDENT AT SELBY CHEMICAL PLANT

A worker at a Selby chemical plant was taken to hospital for treatment last night after being overcome by fumes.
Emergency services were called to an incident at the Industrial Chemicals Group Ltd in Canal View at 10.15pm, after a man fell ill.
He was taken to York District Hospital by paramedics for treatment.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said he had become overcome by fumes, and they had assisted in decontaminating the area.
‰??It is believed the cause was due to insufficient personal protection equipment being used rather than an actual chemical leak,‰?? a statement said.
Police have said they would like to reassure the public there is not believed to be any threat to the safety of the wider community.
Cordons were put in place as police investigated, but officers have now confirmed that this has been lifted and the incident has now been passed onto the Health and Safety Executive.

RURAL KING CHEMICAL SPILL CAUSES EVACUATION AT NEARBY MOVIE THEATER

MARTIN, Tenn. ‰?? The Rural King parking lot in Martin might look calm now, but Friday night, it was flooded with emergency vehicles.
‰??We‰??ve had things like this, but nothing to this caliber as we had today,‰?? Martin fire chief Jamie Summers said.
Summers said they responded to a chemical spill just before 10 p.m. Friday night.
‰??We did find they had a spill of some pool chemicals that mixed with some fertilizer,‰?? he said.
No one was seriously injured, but the spill drew a massive response from at least six different agencies and even caused an evacuation at a nearby movie theater.
Summers said when the firefighters were trying to separate the substances, they began mixing, which caused a chemical reaction.
‰??It wasn‰??t a violent chemical reaction, but it was a reaction that created a boom,‰?? he said.
A hazmat team was brought in to asses the situation.
Summers said the reaction sent two firefighters were to the hospital as a precaution, but shoppers at the home and farm store said the accident doesn‰??t worry them.

GREAT BARRIER REEF: SEA TURTLES DOSED WITH COCKTAIL OF CHEMICALS, SCIENTISTS FIND

SCIENTISTS have uncovered a shocking new threat to the health of the Great Barrier Reef in the form of human medications and pesticides found in sea turtles.
A team led by the University of Queensland found a complex cocktail of chemicals in the blood of coastal turtles tested at two sites.
They compared the results to those collected from ‰??control‰?? sea turtles at locations further afield, far from any human sources.
What they discovered was alarming ‰?? high traces of medications used to treat heart disease and gout, agriculture pesticides and even metals and lubricants.

DEATHS AT WI MILL SHOW NEED FOR ENFORCEMENT OF SAFETY LAWS

MILWAUKEE - Local and national safety advocacy groups said today that the tragic explosion at a corn mill in Cambria, Wisconsin shows the need for increased enforcement of safety laws and regulations.
‰??Our prayers are with the victims and families of this terrible event,‰?? said Jim Schultz, executive director of the Wisconsin Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (WisCOSH). ‰??Duelle Block, Robert Goodenow and Pawel Tordoff lost their lives working in a grain mill, where explosions caused by dust are a known and preventable hazard.‰??
An investigation of the May 31 explosion at the Didion Milling Plant in Cambria, which claimed the lives of Block, Goodenow and Tordoff and caused at least a dozen injuries is now underway.
In 2011 Didion Milling was cited by the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) for failing to equip its facility with equipment to protect against ignition and explosion of dust from grain accumulating inside the mill.
The citation was settled in 1983 for a fine of $3,645.
Current OSHA standards to limit combustible dust standards apply to the grain industry. The agency has been working on a new regulation which would apply to other industries ‰?? including food, wood, rubber, plastics and pharmaceuticals ‰?? since 2009.
The U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) says a general industry dust standard is needed ‰??to prevent further tragedies,‰?? but no final action has been taken to implement a new regulation.

EU STRUGGLES TO DEFINE WHAT CONSTITUTES AN ENDOCRINE DISRUPTOR

Nearly a year after the European Commission (EC) proposed criteria to define endocrine disruptors, experts say talks aimed at ultimately banning toxic chemical substances continue to be bogged down by a mix of politics and science.
For years, reports have shown that hormone-disrupting chemicals are in cosmetics, food packaging, cleaning products, and even baby creams, and calls to ban them have increased. And recently, the European Food Safety Authority reported that 97% of European food products contain pesticide residues within legal limits, some of which are substances suspected of being endocrine disruptors.
According to the World Health Organization, exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals is ‰??suspected to be associated with‰?? breast cancer, changes in immune function, abnormal growth, neurodevelopmental delays, and adverse effects on human reproductive functions.
In 1999, the EC, which is the administrative branch of the European Union, developed a strategy on endocrine disruptors, prompted by the growing evidence of health issues related to their use. The European Parliament then passed laws in 2009and 2012 on pesticides and biocides requiring that these types of products containing endocrine disruptors be regulated on the basis of the hazards they pose.
But EU movement toward achieving a comprehensive ban of endocrine-disrupting substances has been slow. In 2015, the European Court of Justice condemned the EC for failing to act on the European Parliament‰??s 2012 regulation to identify and ban endocrine disruptors by 2013.

CONSUMER PRODUCT ADDITIVES EXAMINED

Consumer products maker SC Johnson and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), an advocacy group, have separately undertaken initiatives seeking to limit consumer exposure to potentially harmful additives in consumer products.

SC Johnson, the maker of cleaners such as Fantastik and Scrubbing Bubbles, has disclosed on its website 368 potential skin allergens that may be present in its products. By 2018, the website, WhatsInsideSCJohnson.com, will also list which skin allergens are contained in specific products.
All cleaning products contain potential allergens, the company says. But to reduce the likelihood that sensitive individuals could develop skin redness or a rash, the firm decided to ‰??give families the whole story.‰??
The list, which an expert panel reviewed, includes both natural and synthetic skin allergens. ‰??In many cases, naturals can have more skin allergens than synthetics,‰?? SC Johnson says. In 2015, the firm revealed fragrances found in its products to allay toxicity fears.
Consumer product firms are being pushed to better disclose ingredients in household and personal care products. Retailers Target and Walmart, for instance, have pressured suppliers on ingredient transparency and insisted that many products be reformulated to remove problematic preservatives such as parabens and formaldehyde donors.

GREEN ACTIVISTS DEMAND RELOCATION OF CHEMICAL STORES FROM OLD DHAKA

Green activists at a programme on Saturday placed several demands including relocation of chemical stores from old Dhaka and setting up of a dedicated chemical hub elsewhere to avoid accidents.
They also called for implementing the environment protection act and rehabilitating the family members of 'Nimtali tragedy'.
Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA) and 21 pro-environmental organisations made the demands at a human chain programme organised in front of Nimtali Chhata Mosque, marking seven years of Nimtali blast.
Former lawmaker Dr Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin, POBA general secretary Md Abdus Sobhan, ward councillor Md Awal, POBA co-secretary Md Selim and president of Puran Dhaka Nagorik Udyog Nazim Uddin, among others, attended the human chain programme, said a press release.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sobhan said an explosion at a chemical warehouse in Nimtali left 124 people dead and many others injured on June 03 in 2010.

CHEMICAL SPILL CAUSES EVACUATION OF LOCAL MARTIN, TN MOVIE THEAT

UPDATE: City of Martin Fire Chief Jamie Summers has confirmed there was a chemical spill at the Rural King in Martin,TN Friday night.
Chief Summers tells WPSD that two chemical substances, a pool cleaner and a fertilizer, spilled inside the store. While firefighters were trying to separate substances, they began mixing and caused a reaction.
Firefighters then left the scene and called in a hazmat team.
Chief Summers says the Cine 6 Theatre was evacuated as a precaution but says no one was in immediate danger.
No reports of any injures.

ENFIELD: Firefighters from three departments and members of the Colchester HazMat team responded to an acid leak at the Enfield scalehouse on the afternoon of May 30.

Enfield Fire was paged to the scene at 1:35 p.m. for a tractor trailer with battery acid leaking from it. They arrived on scene and determined the nature of the call. Hazards Material unit was called from the Special Hazards team from Colchester County to respond. A short time later they arrived on scene and members suited up and went to open the back doors of the truck.
Deputy Fire Chief Todd Pepperdine said the area was cordoned off and asked people to stay away from the area as crews did their work. There were a number of large batteries on the truck that were leaking.

CHEMICAL SPILL AT MEDWAY MARITIME HOSPITAL

Firefighters have been dealing with a chemical spill in a treatment room at Medway Maritime Hospital.
Crews wearing breathing apparatus and gas-tight protection suits were sent into the building at 5.09pm.
A fire Service spokesman said no one was injured, but confirmed a member of staff has been checked over by paramedics as a precaution.
