While I can understand that many members of the listserve seem put off by the religious slant in this discussion, I personally, feel that the politics of science is more important now, than ever. Our basic scientific pillars of government are under threat of defunding or elimination and I personally believe it is relevant and important to address the concerns of politics as it impacts science and safety.

I believe as scientists and safety professionals we have a duty to acknowledge that aspect and do our best to inform the public of the dangers of eliminating relevant data, safety practices and crucial organizations within our government that keep our citizens and environment safe in an industrialized society.

I suspect that the discussion of religious aspects of the lab safety are best discussed off-list, but I wanted to pass along these three comments as closing thoughts.

Sad that someone bring religion and politics into form of this kind. If we do not ‰??stay‰?? focused on science and safety, we are going to lose many people. I think it looks like a moderator needs to be set up and filter out politics and religion. And yes, it is sad for anyone to make statements of this sort. And for those who are not aware of it, religion brought civilization to this world.

Because, Katherine, as much as we may want to think that religion and politics are separate from scientific practices, that is not the world we live in.

I agree with you if you mean keeping religion off the forum as a subject. The comment that was negative about religion was sent to me off line and then later resent on line. I would not have replied if I had known it would later be on line.

However, the fact that the accident under discussion was at a religious school in Texas cannot be ignored because it means that, unlike public schools in Texas that are exempted from the federal OSHA rules, this school comes under OSHA and hazcom or the lab standard apply. And the standards for training and certification for teachers are very likely to be different for religious schools in this state. Even the well-known Texas policies which restrict the science in school text books may play a part in the background and education of that teacher. So there is no way that a competent investigator should ignore the fact that this is a religious school or that it is in Texas.
