Essential Functions
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position manages the university‰??s chemical hygiene and chemical safety programs as required under OSHA, DOT, federal, state and local regulations. The position is responsible for chemical safety aspects of laboratory inspections, the institutional Reproductive Protection Program, the University‰??s OSHA Laboratory Standard Chemical Hygiene Plan program (the position will serve as the institution‰??s Chemical Hygiene Officer). The position will coordinate, or assist in coordination of: Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) training programs (as well as development of web-based training tools), the institutional Hazardous Materials Spill Response Safety and Training program, and the institution‰??s Chemical (‰??Dangerous Goods‰??) Shipping / Transportation programs. The position will serve as the Institutional Biological and Chemical Safety Committee (IBC) chemical/industrial hygiene/toxicology specialist and will do protocol chemical risk assessments. The position!
will provide support to the Occupational Safety Office on chemical occupational exposure assessments, as well as indoor air quality investigations. The position will manage the chemical inventory database system within the university‰??s research and clinical laboratory programs. The position will support the Environmental Compliance Office with chemical safety questions and contaminated property environmental assessments, as needed. The position will support the EH&S emergency chemical spill response team, serving as a responder and as one of the Chemical Emergency Response Team leaders. The position will support institutional emergency preparedness planning efforts as needed. Other duties as assigned.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage the institutional Chemical Hygiene and Safety Programs in Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S): develop safety policies, plans and procedures, maintain regulatory compliance documentation, perform risk assessments, consult on all aspects of chemical safety within the university, assist in budget preparation, etc.
Manage laboratory audit personnel and chemical inventory staff
Training program development and compliance assistance
Audit safety programs, monitor occupational exposures, assist in indoor air quality investigations, serve on or chair safety committees, train faculty and staff, emergency response, etc.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor of science degree in health sciences, basic sciences or related field and professional certification, with a minimum of seven years of chemical safety supervisory experience at a large research or academic institution, OR a minimum of a master of science degree in health sciences, basic sciences or related field, with a minimum of five years of safety supervisory experience at a large research or academic institution.
Professional certifications in Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) or related field (e.g. CIH (preferred), CHO (NRCC), CSP, PE, CBSP, CHP).
Equivalent of Missouri Class E Driver‰??s License.
Ability to rapidly make decisions that affect the safety and well being of others. Working knowledge and ability to apply OSHA, DOT, EPA, building and fire code safety and regulatory requirements. Expertise in industrial hygiene (IH) and occupational health best practices ‰?? ability to assess occupational exposures for safety and compliance purposes (Action levels, TLV, PEL, Bayesian assessment, asbestos and lead requirements, etc.). Ability to interact with a wide range of individuals is very important. The candidate must have demonstrated, through previous work experience, effectively leading a safety program for a large and diverse research organization, as well as demonstrate experience with leading a team and fostering cooperation and collaboration of peers and subordinates. Must physically be able to wear personal protective equipment and lift and move equipment while wearing self contained breathing apparatus and fully encapsulating suits. OSHA HAZWOPER (40 hr) !
certification preferred. This position will participate in the institutional safety training program. Public speaking and technical writing skills are critical. Experience with word processing, spread-sheet, database and presentation software also required.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD science degree in health sciences, basic sciences or related field, professional certification (e.g. CIH, CHO (NRCC), CSP, PE, CBSP, CHP, CHMM) and seven years of safety supervisory experience at a large academic research institution.
Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional, Professional Engineer (in safety related field), or equivalent safety certification.
