Interesting idea, Are there any implications for fire fighting with respect to the inaccessibility of the materials when the system is closed?  While a library shelf full of books has the same issue, random chemicals are certainly more flammable and unpredictable.

Corrosion would be one of my biggest concerns. The pharmaceutical case study at http://www.spacesaver.com/portfolio-posts/pharmaceutical-storage-at-research-lab/ talks about all sorts of ways of dealing with that which sound frightfully expensive.  No wonder pharmaceuticals cost so much-.

Another question is whether this is appropriate for a seismically active zone.  Perhaps this would make containers less likely to fall off a shelf, but then again, could a moderate temblor warp the track system? Will this be as stable as a cabinet that is bolted to the wall?
