Sent on behalf of Kathleen M. Schulz, Chair, ACS Board Standing Committee on Strategic Planning
Dear Fellow ACS Leader,
The purpose of this email is threefold:
  1. To provide you with the updated ACS Strategic Plan for 2017 & Beyond
  2. To share with you how it was developed, and
  3. To invite your thoughts on the ACS strategic plan, planning and implementation
Here goes:
  1. Updated ACS Strategic Plan for 2017 & Beyond
The updated plan is linked, as is an infographic that you may find useful in communicating or discussing the plan with others. The infographic is intended to assist in your conversations about the ACS Strategic Plan with members and other leaders in your local section, division, committee or on your regional board. The main changes to the plan in 2017 are in core values (expansion of the Professionalism Core Value to include safety and ethics), and Goals 1-3. Goals 1-3, and the explanation of scope for each, have been updated and restated. Goal #2 has been broadened, and is now "Empower Members and Member Communities"; Goal #3 has been revised to "Support Excellence in Education" and clarified. Other changes include editing throughout for clarity and accuracy, increased mentions of "global, safety, ethics, industry, chemical stewardship", and updating challenges, opportunities and objectives sections to reflect our current situation and plans for 2017.
  1. How the ACS Strategic Plan update was Developed
The update was developed by the Board Standing Committee on Strategic Planning, with input from many sources, including many of you. The Committee developed the recommended update, which was discussed, revised and approved by the ACS Board of Directors at its Dec., 2016 meeting. We surveyed 700+ ACS staff and volunteer leaders for input on the strategic plan in June, 2016, and were delighted that 344 of you responded (46% response rate)! Thank you so much for providing your thoughts and suggestions. We would much rather have significant input from you than to try to guess your opinions! As an incentive, we awarded $100 Amazon gift cards to the first five respondents. Congratulations, and special thanks, to the early birds - 2 Division Councilors (NUCL, FLUO) and 3 Local Section Councilors (Chicago, Cincinnati, California).
You gave us a great deal of useful input in response to the survey. We also collected and reviewed input from many other ACS sources, including: 2015-2016 Board Discussions, emails from members, conference calls (e.g., Board members with other ACS leaders), other surveys [e.g., Division of Chemical Health & Safety (DCHAS) and ACS Insight Lab], member responses to C&EN Comments, and miscellaneous documents, reports, workshops, and strategic plans [e.g., for DCHAS and the ACS Committee on Chemical Safety (CCS)]. While 90+% of you said you were comfortable with the core values and goals as-is, your verbatim comments and inputs from other sources led us to make revisions for 2017 (described in Item #1, immediately above). Your verbatim responses also taught us that we need to do a better job of communicating with you about the strategic plan - particularly on what is being done or is available with regard to each of the four goals. In response, we will continue our Communications Working Group, formed in 2016, and focus on expanding communications with you. The survey results and verbatims from the ACS Leaders Survey are linked for your information.
  1. Inviting Your Thoughts on ACS Strategic Plan, Planning & Implementation
I invite your thoughts and suggestions on the 2017 strategic plan update, and on any other aspect of ACS strategic plan, planning process, or implementation. Members of the Strategic Planning Committee and the ACS Board of Directors especially welcome suggested improvements and input on emerging trends that may affect successful achievement of the ACS mission and vision - and therefore require changes in goals or strategy. There are many ways to provide such input: ranging from input on the ACS website, to face-to-face conversations or emails to me (kschulz**At_Symbol_Here**comcast.net), Strategic Planning Committee members or our committee staff liaison, Martha Lester (m_lester**At_Symbol_Here**acs.org). We encourage and welcome your input!
I hope the ACS group you represent has a strategic plan, which has been developed or updated within the last 3 years. If you do not, please consider contacting Mark O'Brien (m_obrien**At_Symbol_Here**acs.org) to explore scheduling an ACS Leadership Development System Strategic Planning Retreat. If you are currently implementing a strategic plan, we'd love to hear about your implementation progress and successes!
Thanks again for providing input on the ACS strategic plan, and best wishes to your ACS group for a really successful 2017!
Sincerely,
Kathleen
