The Office of the Vice President for Research is seeking an experienced Chemical Health and Safety Manager to provide leadership for the Chemical Health and Safety group within the Division of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS).
Reporting to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), the Chemical Health and Safety Manager leads the Chemical Health and Safety group within EHS to advance the health and safety of the University of Connecticut's faculty, staff, students and visitors and promote compliance with local, State, and Federal regulations and nationally recognized standards. The Chemical Health and Safety Manager develops and administers the University's Chemical Health and Safety Programs, including the Chemical Hygiene, Chemical Inventory, Laboratory Inspection, Laboratory Ventilation and Regulated Waste Management programs, and serves as the University's Chemical Hygiene Officer under the OSHA Laboratory Standard.
The Chemical Health and Safety group supports, services and partners with a broad range of units across the University's Storrs and regional campuses, including the research and academic communities; Facilities Operations & Building Services; Planning, Design & Construction; Farm Operations; Public Safety; Office of Environmental Policy; and Purchasing. The Chemical Health and Safety Manager leads the group to provide technical assistance to the University community with hazard recognition, risk assessment, and the development of prevention, control and mitigation strategies. As the University's Chemical Hygiene Officer, the successful candidate will promote an authentic culture of safety among faculty, staff, students and visitors in research and teaching laboratories, fostering collaboration and advocating risk awareness and best practices. This is a full-time 12-month per year position.
Minimum Qualifications
‰?¢ Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Toxicology, or Environmental Health and Safety related discipline and five years' experiencein health and safety program management. OR Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Toxicology, or Environmental Health and Safety related discipline and seven years' experience in health and safety program management.
‰?¢ In depth knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, nationally recognized standards and guidelines, as related to environmental health and safety functions of the position.
‰?¢ Excellent written and oral communication skills. Proficiency in delivering presentations and conducting training on technical topics for diverse audiences.
‰?¢ Established interpersonal skills that promote building strong working relationships and demonstrated ability to interact with colleagues in a positive and constructive manner.
‰?¢ Substantive laboratory hazard recognition and risk assessment skills.
‰?¢ Experience in the identification, evaluation and control of hazardous conditions associated with chemical handling, storage, processing, transportation, use and disposal commonly found in a large academic or multi-facility research environment.
‰?¢ Excellent administrative and supervisory skills.
‰?¢ Competent in the use of computers and database software, including Microsoft Office products.
‰?¢ Ability to respond promptly in-person to all campus locations, including the regional campuses, requiring environmental health and safety services.
Preferred Qualifications
‰?¢ Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Toxicology, or Environmental Health and Safety related discipline and five years' experience in health and safety program management preferred.
‰?¢ Professional Certification in one or more of the Environmental Health and Safety disciplines, e.g., Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer (NRCC-CHO).
‰?¢ Experience reviewing and providing risk assessment and safety guidance on research protocols involving hazardous chemicals.
‰?¢ Proficiency in risk communication and media relations.
‰?¢ Experience developing environmental health and safety programs.
