TWO PEOPLE TAKEN TO LOCAL HOSPITALS AFTER CHEMICAL EXPOSURE AT ORANGE PAPER MILL

ORANGE COUNTY - Orange County Emergency Management has confirmed that three people were exposed to a chemical at an Paper Plant located in Orange.
The incident happened at International Paper on Inland road off of highway 87.
According to Acadian, only two people have been transported to local hospitals. One was transported to Houston by Medical helicopter. Another person was transported to Baptist in Beaumont.
International Paper Public Relations Director Ashley Moore released this statement about the incident.
"Our thoughts are with the employees and their families. An internal incident investigation is underway. The safety of employees and contractors is a core value and the top priority at our mill. We continue to focus on making sure all of our team members are working safely."

OMAHA CREW BEING BROUGHT IN TO CLEAN-UP CHEMICAL SPILL NEAR

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb.
A chemical spill Thursday set off a scare at a South Sioux City truck stop.
It happened in the 4600 block of Dakota Avenue. That's where a tractor-trailer hauling sodium hydroxide was leaking in the parking lot of the Crystal Cafe.
The chemical is an acid that can cause severe burns - but fortunately no one suffered any exposure.
Authorities brought in a specialized crew out of Omaha to clean up the spill.

TRAIN DERAILMENT CAUSES SMALL CHEMICAL SPILL

ROXANA ‰?? The derailment of a Norfolk Southern chemical train on tracks serving the Wood River Refinery resulted in a small release of sulfuric acid Thursday morning, but no injuries occurred as a result, a Norfolk Southern spokesman said.

About two dozen firefighters from the refinery‰??s corporate fire department, along with railroad officials, private contractors and refinery security, responded to the scene. The refinery maintains its own specialized firefighting service to deal with industrial incidents. Allen said the refinery‰??s fire department responded as mutual aid at the request of Norfolk Southern, which owns the tracks inside the facility.
David Pidgeon, a spokesman with Norfolk Southern, said seven cars came off the tracks, and two of those overturned. About a gallon of waste sulfuric acid escaped during the incident, which ‰??Norfolk Southern has contained and is in the process of removing from the site,‰?? Pidgeon said.

VANCOUVER APARTMENT FIRE DAMAGES UNITS, DISPLACES 11

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) ‰?? Officials say new Christmas footie pajamas may have sparked inside a dryer, starting a fire that has displaced 11 people.
Crews with the Vancouver Fire Department were called to The Mews at Cascadia Village about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, our news partners at The Columbian reported.
Two apartment units were damaged in the blaze. Seven adults and four children were displaced, according to the American Red Cross, which is providing them with temporary housing, food, clothing and comfort kits.
Officials told KATU News the fire may have sparked due to some kind of chemical on brand new footie pajamas that were in the dryer. Fire educators say you should always know what you're putting in your washer and dryer. A lot of synthetic fabrics and chemicals aren't tested for how they might react to each other.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TEAM ASSISTS WITH CHEMICAL SPILL CLEANUP

ST. GEORGE ‰?? A small chemical spill of Xylene in a laboratory at Dixie Regional Medical Center brought a quick response from a St. George Fire Department‰??s hazmat team Thursday afternoon.
Two fire trucks packed with firefighters from the St. George Fire Department responded to the hospital after receiving a call reporting a chemical spill in the histology lab, St. George Fire Captain Tyler Talbot said.
The St. George Fire Department and Dixie Regional‰??s emergency management team responded to the Xylene spill and determined it to be minor, McKoye Mecham, communications specialist for Intermountain Healthcare, said.
Xylene is a hydrocarbon widely used in medical technology as a solvent. In histologist laboratories Xylene is used for tissue processing, staining and cover slipping, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Exposure to the substance can occur through inhalation, ingestion, and eye or skin contact. Exposure can cause irritation of the nose and throat, with symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. In higher doses it can cause depression of the central nervous system.

GERMANY: CHEMICAL ODORS LEAD POLICE TO FAILED ALCHEMIST

A German landlady's concerns about suspicious chemical odors from her tenant's apartment led police to a man who was trying unsuccessfully to extract gold from old cellphone and computer circuit boards.
The woman went to police in Braubach, near the western city of Koblenz, on Wednesday, concerned that she hadn't seen her 28-year-old tenant for some time. Police said Thursday that officers found a range of chemicals, and at first suspected he was running an illegal drug lab.
Further checks and questioning of the tenant, who was on a trip to southern Germany, revealed that he had been using the chemicals to try to extract gold.
The man had gone to visit acquaintances, including a physicist, for advice. They suggested he give up.

DOOR CO. RESORT RE-OPENS AFTER POOL CHEMICAL MIXTURE PROMPTS EVACUATION

SEVASTAPOL (WLUK) -- A Door County resort was declared safe after it was evacuated Wednesday morning. Two maintenance workers were taken to the hospital as a precaution after one of them improperly mixed two chemicals in the pool area.
The call to Westwood Shores Waterfront Resort, located at 4303 Bay Shore Dr. in Sevastapol, came in around 8 a.m.
Sturgeon Bay fire chief Tim Dietman explained what happened in the pool control room.
‰??They had accidentally dumped a gallon of pool shock into a bulk container, about five gallons, of muriatic acid, and it reacted instantly and started creating very strong vapors throughout the entire building," said Dietman.
The two maintenance workers are expected to be okay, says Dan Williams, the county emergency services director.
‰??We transported two patients to the hospital with some difficulty of breathing," said Williams. "We also treated about eight people on scene, gave them breathing treatments. The major problem with this situation, this type of material, is it creates chest congestion, tightness and burning in the throat.‰??
Williams says the two workers taken to the hospital and the eight guests that received breathing treatments were all adults.
The resort says it had 46 guests Wednesday morning. Manali Banerjee of Manteno, Illinois was one of them.
‰??We were woken up by a fireman knocking on the door saying we have to evacuate," said Banerjee. "It just smelled like chlorine.‰??
Dietman says after the responding fire crews made sure everyone was out of the resort and evaluated, the focus was on determining what was mixed.
"To verify exactly what the chemicals were, approximately how much of what was combined," he said. "We‰??re not just going to run in and get down into that control room.‰??

100M EVACUATION ZONE IN PLACE AFTER CHEMICAL EXPLOSION AT RUAWAI COLLEGE POOL

A person has been injured and a 100m emergency evacuation zone is in place after a chemical explosion at a school pool in Northland.
Ruawai College has been isolated after a person tending the pool added the wrong product, causing a volatile reaction.
Those inside a nearby home were forced to evacuate as the reaction continued for more than an hour.
The accident happened just after 11.35am today.
Four fire crews were at the school trying to neutralise the reaction.
Northern Fire Service communication shift manager Jaron Phillips said when the chemicals were mixed they caused an explosion and it was "still going off".
A person had inadvertently inhaled poisonous fumes and was being treated by ambulance officers for minor injuries.

TRICLOSAN: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS DANGEROUS CHEMICAL

Minnesota has officially become the first state to ban soaps containing triclosan, a once widely used antibacterial chemical that has been proved to ‰??disrupt sex and thyroid hormones and other bodily functions‰?? and which scientists believe can lead to strains of resistant bacteria, according to CBS News. The ban will take effect on Jan. 1.
It turns out triclosan is not just unhealthy for our bodies, but it‰??s also poisonous to the environment, as researchers at the University of Minnesota found. Their research revealed that triclosan ‰??can break down into potentially harmful dioxins in lakes and rivers.‰??
Some are saying that Minnesota‰??s decision is an example of a change that started at a local level, as the North Star State‰??s decision seems to have inspired a federal ban by the FDA of the toxic chemical; that will be instated in September 2017. ‰??I wanted it to change the national situation with triclosan, and it certainly has contributed to that,‰?? Minnesota state Sen. John Marty told CBS News.
When asked about the federal ban, a spokesperson for the FDA said, ‰??Antibacterial hand and body wash manufacturers did not provide the necessary data to establish safety and effectiveness for the 19 active ingredients addressed in this final rule-making.‰?? Janet Woodcock, MD, director of the FDA‰??s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in the statement, ‰??Consumers may think antibacterial washes are more effective at preventing the spread of germs, but we have no scientific evidence that they are any better than plain soap and water.‰?? She said that in addition to not being useful, some antibacterial ingredients ‰?? not just triclosan ‰?? can actually cause harm over time

TANKER SPILLS THOUSANDS OF GALLONS OF JET FUEL

LIBERTY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A HAZMAT situation in Liberty County closed down S.R. 12 after a tanker overturned spilling jet fuel on the road Tuesday.
Liberty County Sheriff officials along with Florida Highway Patrol and other neighboring fire, EMS, and HAZMAT teams rushed to contain the spill. Sheriff Nick Finch says the driver of the tanker was on the way to Tallahassee from Panama City when the tanker rolled over.
The driver was taken to Bay Medical Sacred Heart with serious injuries, but is expected to recover. Sheriff Finch says the Department of Environmental Protection has been notified of the spill.
The tanker spilled almost 8,000 gallons of fuel.

HAZMAT CALLED TO WINSTON-SALEM HOUSE AFTER BODY FOUND

A spokesperson from the police department says a body was found at the property.

HAZMAT CREWS ON SCENE OF GAS LEAK IN CHESAPEAKE

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- Emergency officials spent hours investigating a gas leak at TransMontaigne Product Services in Chesapeake.
The incident was reported at 8:16 a.m. at the company located in the 7600 block of Halifax Lane, according to the Chesapeake Fire Department.
Officials with TransMontaigne Product Services estimate about 1,000 gallons of gasoline leaked.
Fire officials say the leak has been stopped and the product has been contained.
The Chesapeake Fire Department‰??s Foam Team and Hazardous Materials Team are on the scene, as well as a local clean up contractor.
The Chesapeake Fire Department says no evacuations are in place and there is no hazard to the public.

WHAT LURKS INSIDE ALL THOSE OLD BUILDINGS?

It took five months to get started on the demolition of the Carpet Mill building on South Fourth Street.
The delay wasn't attributed to structural issues, but rather questions about chemical containers stored in the crumbling building.
An abatement order by the Environmental Protection Agency on the owner of the property had to be resolved before the property at 417 S. Fourth St., which partially collapsed during a July storm, could be demolished.
According to an EPA report, a ruptured water pipe in the building that flooded the basement in January of 2007 prompted the city of St. Joseph to conduct water sampling when barrels of chemicals were spotted in the building.
The vacant structure was used by HPI Chemical Products as storage. The report stated that HPI owns and operates eight properties in St. Joseph, and lists William Garvey as the owner.
In March of 2007, EPA special agents issued a warrant and inspected the building. The report states that "hundreds of drums, bags and other containers" were stored throughout each of the four floors of the building.
Samples found that arsenic, chromium, lead and various pesticides were stored in the containers. The report stated that many of the containers were "badly deteriorated and leaking" and some pesticides were misbranded, canceled and unregistered.

FUNKY SMELL BLANKETS PARTS OF PHILLY

A "rotten eggs" smell that slunk across the city Friday night was caused by a chemical release at a South Jersey refinery, officials said Saturday.
Paulsboro Refinery released 130 pounds of sulfur dioxide and nine pounds of hydrogen sulfide Friday night, according to Philadelphia police.
PBF Energy, which runs the refinery, apologized and said Saturday that a brief loss of power at the refinery shortly before 8 p.m. Friday resulted in "flaring and odors." The refinery is located just across the Delaware River.
The odor was not dangerous, officials said, and no injuries were reported.
The release was not at a level high enough to require reporting by the company, said a police spokesperson.
