DCHAS members may be interested in the potential impact of the EPA's recent update to RCRA rules, especially as it impacts laboratory chemical waste generators. An ACS group is studying the new rules to determine what advantages and challenges there are for lab generators in these revisions. We hope to have general guidance to the changes available in the new year. One of the big challenges is guess how the various state regulators may interpret the rules and adjust state regulations based on those interpretations.

People in New England may be interested in the opportunity to hear about the rule from EPA in person on January 31 at Northeastern College in Boston. Registration information for this meeting, as well as information from EPA about other sessions around the country can be found below.

EPA Meeting at Northeastern

Good Morning,
We have set up a registration for the EPA Meeting to discuss the new
HazWaste Rule on January 31, 2017 at Northeastern. Please log onto:

The meeting starts at 9 am and will last through the morning. More
details on the event will be sent out as we get closer.

When I asked EPA if other meetings will be held for Colleges and
Universities, I rec'd this message:

We‰??ve scheduled a meeting with generators in Des Moines, Iowa for March 7th and
there‰??s a good chance we will also have a meeting with generators in Denver
in mid-to late February. We also have a meeting with generators being
arranged in New Jersey (not sure where) for sometime in May . In all cases,
either the region or state is conducting the necessary outreach to get
generators to come to the training.

What‰??s different with the Boston meeting is that it will be devoted to
colleges and universities only. Subsequent training/outreach meetings will
be with all types of generators. Since C2E2 and CSHEMA had big concerns
with our rule, we thought it would be worthwhile to devote time with your
organizations to walk you through the rule and identify questions and
concerns questions colleges and universities still may have. I‰??m assuming
C2E2 and CSHEMA will conduct the necessary outreach to get colleges and
universities in the Boston area to attend and possibly from other areas
nearby since there are so many up there. To the extent you are able to get
colleges and universities from other parts of the country, so much the
better.

One thing that would be helpful is to query your members and have them
identify questions or issues beforehand so we can prepare and make it a
more effective meeting.
