Primary Function of Organizational Unit
Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is nationally and internationally recognized as one of the premier engineering programs in the world. Faculty and students have earned international recognition for their strong multi-disciplinary and collaborative research. MSE has state-of-the art teaching and research facilities and is heavily involved 9 research centers and more than 35 teaching and research laboratories. MSE houses two National Science Foundation Industry/University Collaborative Research Centers (IUCRC) led by its faculty. One IUCRC, The Center for Dielectrics and Piezoelectrics (CDP), aims to provide international leadership and train next-generation scientists in the fundamental science and engineering that underpin dielectric and piezoelectric materials. The center supports industries based on capacitor and piezoelectric materials and devices through the development of new materials, processing strategies, electrical testing, and nanoscale characterization and!
modeling methodologies. The other IUCRC, the Silicon Solar Consortium (SiSoC), has created a multi-university, multi-company culture addressing the science and technology issues the international photovoltaic silicon materials industry must solve in order to meet the future needs of advanced silicon solar cell manufacturing, while educating graduate students with photovoltaic materials/devices expertise.
MSE offers Bachelors of Science, Masters of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Materials Science and Engineering, a Master of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering, and a Master of Nanoengineering degree. The faculty includes two members of the National Academy of Engineering, one recipient of the National Medal of Technology, one member of the National Academy of Inventors, seven Distinguished Professors, seven National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award winners and three Department of Defense Young Investigator Award winners. Eight faculty are Fellows of at least one professional society, including the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Materials Research Society, The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society, American Society for Metals, American Ceramic Society, American Chemical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Physical Society; four are Fellows of multiple professional societies.
Essential Job Duties
The Safety Officer will monitor all MSE teaching and research laboratories and facilities to ensure that students, faculty, post-docs and staff comply with NCSU policies, state and federal safety regulations, and industry best-practices. The Safety Officer is responsible for the development and leading of safety education and training (initial training and continuing-education of all researchers), development of policies and procedures, safety inspections, and recommendations for solving shortcomings.
Duties included, but are not limited to:
‰?¢Facilitating the development of safety policies and programs in a multicultural environment with diverse research activities
‰?¢Advising and instructing on various safety-related topics
‰?¢Periodically reviewing and updating existing policies
‰?¢Initiating and organizing safety training and continuing education of all students, faculty and staff involved in research
‰?¢Inspecting laboratories and facilities
‰?¢Identifying safety shortcomings and work with laboratory managers to put in place safe operational procedures which identify and take into account all relevant hazards
‰?¢Carrying out risk assessments and recommend how risks could be reduced
‰?¢Periodically inspecting laboratories and facilities, keeping records of inspection findings and producing reports that suggest improvements

Minimum Education/Experience
‰?¢ Master‰??s Degree in safety management, engineering, natural sciences and 5 years of relevant experience OR Bachelor‰??s Degree with 10 years of relevant experience
