Monday - Friday, 8:00 am 4:30 pm; 1.0 FTE; Salary Range: $56,827-85,405/yr. Location: Marquam Hill Campus.

Functions/Duties of Position

This position will work in the Environmental Health & Radiation Safety program (EHRS) with duties that encompass all missions of OHSU. This position will primarily function as the Chemical Safety Officer (CSO) and Laboratory Safety Officer for OHSU as part of the EHRS Office. The EHRS program encompasses chemical, biosafety, fire/life safety, radiation safety, as well as general safety oversight across the university. The CSO will be responsible for developing and implementing an OHSU-wide chemical hygiene plan including providing technical guidance, training, audits and risk analysis for a safe environment to facilitate research and academic excellence. Chemical safety includes delivery of chemical hygiene consulting to all facilities in research for both laboratories and lab support areas. Projects and/or responsibilities in other Integrity Program areas may be assigned.

The Safety Specialist II acts as a professional and technical resource in performing specialized and detailed guidance, review and final determination/resolution (as assigned) of activities and areas to determine conformity with federal and state regulations and OHSU policies. This position provides leadership to the OHSU community in the area of integrity by independent and professional performance of the following:
• Provide consultative services to EHRS stakeholders, collaborate with internal groups to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and safety initiatives.
• Provide expertise, safety support and technical consultation to OHSU to monitor and promote compliance with regulatory standards, including integration with overall regulatory activities of EHRS and Integrity.
• Timely and accurate assessment in accordance with regulatory, policy, and process requirements;
• Develop and deliver professional training and education;
• Serve as a professional resource for safety, compliance and integrity; and
• Partner with leadership in development, maintenance, and improvement of OHSU policies, SOPs, and technologies in order to maximize compliance, efficiency, and reflect current trends.

Job Requirements

Required:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
At least 5 years of related experience.
-Working knowledge of requirements related to safety
-Ability to understand biological, chemical and scientific terminology, and to accurately identify drugs, devices, procedures, etc. in order to provide thorough and accurate review and guidance;
-Ability to read and comprehend complex scientific procedures in order to provide thorough and accurate assessments;
-Ability to effectively work both independently and in a team environment; effective organizational abilities, oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills; ability to operate and communicate effectively while meeting multiple deadlines and completing projects simultaneously; ability to interact in a positive, productive manner with research faculty and staff, leadership, and other staff (demonstrating sensitivity, tact, and professionalism);
-Advanced proficiency with electronic systems and software.
-Have applicable or related certification, such as CIH, CHMM, CSP.

Preferred:

Preference given to Certified Chemical Hygiene Officers (CCHO) or those who can obtain CCHO certification within 2 years of hire, as well as those with research laboratory experience.
EHRS-specific experience at an academic medical center.
