I would call Sargent-Welch--a google search shows they are still around. If I had these I would ask for their composition if they did not have an old MSDS on file, because my waste disposal vendor could likely classify with the composition. And I would let them know it was OK if it took them a couple of days but that I really needed an answer....

They are likely going to have to go to old, paper files...

Please forgive the cross posting. I just had a standardization set for turbidity instrument show up for waste. They are Sargent-Welch Turbidity Standards and were purchased in 1986. The ampules are still sealed and labeled with their NTU value, but nothing else. The box also states that ampules were calibrated against Formazin Polymer reference suspensions prepared according to EPA and APHA methods.

A formazine suspension is made by mixing solutions of 5 g/L hydrazine sulfate and 50 g/L hexamethylenetetramine is what I have found in my research into these ampules.

Would I be correct in an assumption of the Formazine being the component of the material? Would any of you happen to have an MSDS for this?

I want to ensure that I classify the material correctly for disposal.
