Margaret,

I've consistently recommended the use of ear plugs/muffs over the "noise canceling headphones" attached to a radio or audio player. For plugs/muffs, I know what the NRR is, but have no control how loud an individual plays his/her music. For some clients, they have went with my recommendation, others have not..

The question has come up from our campus grounds crew about using sound cancelling earbuds vs ear plugs when working. I can see both sides of it, but we are currently weighing the risk vs wants. With ear plugs, we know the noise is reduced greatly to a safe level, with headphones, this is not easily quantified as we could be exchanging equipment noise for music.

My supervisor is interested in finding out what other campuses are doing in regards to their grounds crews and if earbuds vs ear plugs has come up. Please share if you are able.
