Subject: Task Force on Laboratory Safety Releases Guidelines & Accompanying Website
Dear Creating Safety Cultures committee,
To help strengthen the culture of safety at university labs and research centers, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) has published A Guide to Implementing a Safety Culture in Our Universities<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.aplu.org_library_safety-2Dculture_file&d=CwIFaQ&c=lb62iw4YL4RFalcE2hQUQealT9-RXrryqt9KZX2qu2s&r=meWM1Buqv4IQ27AlK1OJRjcQl09S1Zta6YXKalY_Io0&m=dJVRN9UGPRdff2cVUGBPdzVfn6eVsXZuBAOzH2eutgU&s=LZldii8-c2dZ0HEkEBGgDLkbV-_OMv6Jx0UHgY9Bn2U&e= > with a companion website <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.aplu.org_researchsafety&d=CwIFaQ&c=lb62iw4YL4RFalcE2hQUQealT9-RXrryqt9KZX2qu2s&r=meWM1Buqv4IQ27AlK1OJRjcQl09S1Zta6YXKalY_Io0&m=dJVRN9UGPRdff2cVUGBPdzVfn6eVsXZuBAOzH2eutgU&s=51d6nHb-c7lqDMDAHwmifqCqdS3wC9cBxR08LNtEXp4&e= >. We are writing you because we drew heavily upon the Creating Safety Cultures in Academic Institutions report from ACS, and in the Guide, we have encouraged presidents, chanc!
ellors, research vice presidents, and other campus members to read Creating Safety Cultures.
This Guide is a roadmap for a university-wide effort to strengthen research safety, which must be every institution"s top priority. The guide is intended for university presidents and chancellors who have made a renewed commitment to improve their institutional culture of safety. It is also intended for the campus-leadership team that the president or chancellor appoints to helm this effort.
The Guide has action steps, resources, and recommendations to help institutions take the steps necessary to protect the safety of their students, faculty, and staff in research and teaching laboratories; in shops, studios, and stages; in classrooms and lecture halls; and in the field. In addition to the report, APLU has developed a website where a suite of tools, best practice, and other resources are available and will be regularly updated to help implement a culture of safety.
The Guide was written by the Task Force on Laboratory Safety. APLU formed the task force following serious recent incidents resulting from significant safety lapses, including the death of a laboratory research assistant and a lab explosion that severely injured a graduate student. The task force, which APLU created in coordination with the Association of American Universities, the American Chemical Society, and the Council on Governmental Relations, comprises senior research officers, environmental and health safety officers, faculty, and industry and national lab representatives. It is co-chaired by Taylor Eighmy, vice chancellor for research & engagement at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Mark R. McLellan, vice president for research and dean of the School of Graduate Studies at Utah State University.
We ask that you share this Guide with your colleagues.
Sincerely,
Kacy, Taylor, and Mark
